Took mine in too

Mine shifted real notchy from the get go. I couldn't get into 1st or reverse at a stop. I also have a grinding noise when I slow in gear. THis went on for 3000 miles. Then with my 5th wheel hitch finally installed, I towed 14,000 lbs with it for 1000 miles (San Diego to San Francisco n back) and woo-lah! Shift smooth as glass. Still grinds at low speeds though. I'll pi$$ test it through Blackstone Labs and if it comes back normal then fine, it can grind all it wants!!!!!

I guess that Im lucky because my 6 speed shifts like glass. I have 1000 miles on my truck and I have never grinded a gear. So far best transmission I have had. Good luck... ... . :D :D :D

Mine used to be as smooth as glass too. This wasnt a problem the first 4000 miles. Something definitly changed somewhere. I have it at the dealer getting looked at. When I called them yesterday they said they didn't see anything wrong and couldn't duplicate the problem. I told them it is notchy all the time, first three gears and reverse, and it gets worse with a lot of city driving. I sure hope they can figure it out and fix it.

the wiggle

My five speed will act up once in a while getting into third. I have developed a little "wiggle" once I have entered the third gate. It seems if I push or pull the stick to one side a little while engaging it will always go in. I do not know if it is a fluke or not, but it beats pushing on the stick and not having it engage. :(

wiggle

Hummmmm!

Have only run across a couple guys with shifting troublems and in every case they commeted that they found that there lub level was low,my thinking was they don't inspect the truck untill something happens... . So much for there preventive maintance!!!

3rd and 4th are straight line, say detent out of 2nd and shifter is lined up,,,Can you feel the spring pushing the lever when going for 1st/2nd??

JTISDALE... . If your shifting problems are tempurature related, leave it overnight at the dealership when COLD weather is in the forcast.

On our 6sp, it is a guarentee that the 3 gear grind will occur at first drive in the AM.

jjw

The dealership has had it for a week. (Here) we have had like 40's in the am and up to 70's in the pm. It doesn't matter what the ambient air temperature is. First, second, third, and reverse all "catch" when you go to put it in gear (at any temp, under any condition). It does it at a stop, while rolling, when you upshift, or downshift, and the more city traffic, (thus shifting and clutching more) the worse it gets. It has never grinded going into any gear. Feels like something is bent or out of adjustment or EXACTLY like the syncros are toast in first, second, third, and reverse. No other gears are affected. It does NOT help to double clutch or wiggle the shifter. And I dont think it has any thing to do with lack of maintenance on my part. :p I just hope its gets fixed. I have no other complaints about the truck. Excellent power and 19. 625 mpg empty. :(

ps: I am really trying to keep a good attitude over this.

overnights

For anyone with a temp related problem, you have to specifically ask the dealership to leave the truck out overnight if the problem happens when cold. Some dealerships will park customers' vehicles inside overnight. Then the vehicle will be warm, and the problems will not show up.

A good attitude helps, but be firm with the service department. A call to STAR can sometimes get the ball rolling. Mentioning the words "lemon law" to the right people will also get the show on the road.

Also, if your clutch is failing to disengage, then you will also have this problem. Try waiting to shift for ten or fifteen seconds after clutching and see if it gets any better.

Replace the transmission fluid with RedLine MTF. Then put a minimum of 300 continuous Highway miles on it to warm things up. I noticed a difference... ... . so should you.

off check

Is there any problem engaging with the motor off, clutch in? The gears should slide easy when the truck is off. You should be able to engage any gear this way, as the shafts will rotate slightly with the truck off when the sychros and sliders try and engage.

I really appreciate everyone's support and advice, and I know I'm not the only one with this problem. I might get my truck back this week. Then I will try the shifting with the engine off. Who is STAR? Will changing transmission fluid mess up my warranty? Thanks... :)

Mine has grinded in 3rd gear (sometimes 4th) since new. I have to either double clutch... . or blip the throttle and ease it in. If I do that I can avoid it. When it's warm... shifts smooth as silk. If someone could get a good answer on this it would be great.
