Hey Guys I have a source for doing 5spd to 6spd conversions. While researching trans and parts price was from 4,400 to 6,300. This place will do a conversion for about 4,200. My question is how many would go for it so I can try to get the price lower. This place also offers to sell you the parts fro the DIY so you have only labor and driveshaft work

I think you are the only one that can answer that; is truck paid for, can you afford it, do you want to put that much money in a used truck, etc. personally i traded my automatic in when the transmission started given me trouble. When the rearend blew that was the final straw. traded 98 , 12 valve for 2001 6 speed. I haven't regretted it other than being in debt longer, what the heck though we both love the Okie-Go. I think others may disagree but you asked, just my opinion.

Just one mans opinion... . If I were a BOMBer looking for high HP I would stick with the 5 sp. and fix the 5th gear issue... much better trans for the racing use [even though it's not got the high torque rating]. . look how long 600++ HP in HVAC's rig has lasted with no sign of problems...
I now have a six speed and think the five speed is a better choice for the HP guys. . 1st through 3rd are usless in a racing enviroment... 4 then 5/6 are the ones where you can hammer down and get some use to the RPM. . 20/20 hindsight is always better #ad

My thoughts exactly, the 6 speed is great for towing but definately slower, as soon as you shift and nail it, it is on the redline again.

I very much agree with you (Gary)willyslover. I too have a 6spd now,but I think the 5spd is a way better BOMBer transmission. The wide ratios of the 5spd make it a much faster unit than the 6spd. I do like my 6,but I wish I'd kept my '99 5spd even more now.

For that kinda dough (which I don't have) I think I would look into an over/under drive first.

Gary - Trade your 6sp for Spyke's 5sp and then you can have matching projects.

I was looking at the 6spd because it has the higher torque rating. I lost 3rd pulling my trailer and figured it was because of the trans and engine being rated for 460ftpds each. I am also looking at going to an overdrive unit, so I'll wait and see which is a better way, I do know that some of the BOMBrs are making lots of HP without problems. I appreciate all of the input thanks

you can skip-shift the 6-speed
I start off in 2nd and if I want to get going "fast", I skip from 3rd to 5th, a little low on the r's in 5th but if you darn near red line it in 3rd, then it pulls good in 5th. the overdrive in in 6th.

Happy Haulin'!

The good news is I still have the "donor rig" in my driveway . . so I still have a 5 sp available. . now just to decide if it goes in my CJ7 project [Torque monster 383 stroker 425/450 HP going in now] or in my '01 ETH/DEE project. . guess I have the best of both worlds ... very costly donor though #ad

Spyke,
Your 3rd gear problem is a really odd and freak thing to me. For us to hear of a lost 3rd gear would tell us someone at NV Gear didn't assemble your 3rd gear correctly. I wouldn't condemn that all 4500's are junk for one very unusual mishap. Especially when all the racers that are pushing 400-500hp are doing 3rd gear launches off the line.

The rated info for the NV4500 seems to be very inconsistant. While I was at my local Dealer I saw an information book that showed ratings of equipment. The clutch was the item I saw that was rated for only 450 lbs-ft of torque, but the 4500 was rated for something like 550 or 600 lbs-ft of torque.
I honestly think the overdrive unit on a 5spd is a better way to go than trying to swap in a 6spd. You get the best of both worlds that way.

Eric,
I've tried the skip shift(2-4 or 3-5),and it kinda sucks. The RPM drop is way too much. That's the disadvantage I realized from the 6spd.

I'm still trying to figure out the best racing gear selections. So far it seems a 4 wheel drive hole shot in 3rd gear*,to fourth, then shift to 6th seems to work.
*Don't try this at home kids,I'm a (self)trained (non)professional on a (not)enclosed race course. * #ad
