What is the best transmission oil for the 6sp manual. Would like to improve shifting and read that some are using Amsoil 5w30 Series 3000. Is this true?

I don't know if it is the best but I am using Redline MTL, several people are using Royal Purple SynchroMAX (or MESH), and many are using some form of Amsoil.

There is also a Texaco and Mobil oil of somesort that will work, which one it is I don't know. Go up and click on the 03' common questions I looked up the types of oil people were using and it is posted there.

i do not want to start any wars but, i put amsoil in my 2001 six speed at 45,000 and took it out at 45,500. it was noticeably worse. i got scared and payed 11. 50 a quart for the mopar stuff. maybe it was just my six speed. i will not try it again in the 2003

The mopar stuff here is 14. 10 a quart. I bought the gm syncromesh fluid Part# 12345349 for 9. 91 a ouart. I was told it is the same fluid. I havent put it in yet. Has anyone else used the gm fluid?

Thanks Steve

I ran my '01 to 95k before getting my '03. I changed my fluid at around 25-30k mile intervals. I used Amsoil 5W-30, Amsoil Series 3K 5W-30, and RP Synchrowhatever in that order. They all performed fine for me. When I made the first change I had seen one post that Amsoil didn't work but many others that did. I went with the majority without any regrets and plan on using the RP in my current truck after I get some more miles on.

Darren

I have used the 5W-30 in my 03' 6-speed (NV-5600) for the last 9,000 miles (11,000 on the truck) and it is doing just fine! First thing I noticed was the shifting was smoother, especially when it was colder this past winter.

Use only Amsoil fluids in my truck. Same with my last truck and it went over 400,000 miles. I changed my transmission over to Amsoil 10-30 at 18,000 miles along with all of my other fluids and don't plan on changing. My truck was bought new on Feb. 14th and rolled over 45,000 miles at 3:15 this morning. Everyone has their own opinions about oil, no one is wrong, if it works for you, stick with it. Thats my opinion.

I've put about 8000 miles on the RP synchromax, no problems. Almost took away that slight 3rd gear grind when cold. Its just noticeable now on that first time into third when its cold outside.

I'm gonna try Redline MTL in about 20k just to give it a try and form an opinion on it as well. I use amsoil in everything else, however, i won't put engine oil in the transmission. Just my opinion though, others have had success with it.

Just wondering? If you had fluid problems from using a not recommended fluid wouldn't it show up after many many miles? I understand that DC and NV only recommend one fluid for these transmissions and will void your warranty if any other is used. What is their motivation for doing this? Why do the only recommend one fluid?

how do you check the fluid in these 6spds? i looked all over this morning all i could see was a threaded plug that took a HUGE allen wrench is this what has to be pulled out? what sixe wrench does this huge thing take?

pit,

i undertsand redline helps these trannys shift easier thats why and yes i know it voids warranty... ... . what doesnt?

EDIT: restating the below to avoid some confusion :(

Cat, get a 10mm bolt which has a 17 mm head (short one) & nut and then use this to remove the plug. You can weld the nut on or get another and double nut it. The head (or nut) fits in the 17mm hole for the plug. Cheaper than getting a 17mm wrench for only one plug. Havent found any other plugs that use this size on the truck - yet.

EDIT: I used a 10mm x 1. 5 x 25 for mine - the head for a 10mm bolt is 17mm about 4$ from the local Ckrs

NVG only tested the mopar lube... once it was found to suit their needs they said hey this is what works for us use it. In my opinion in no way does this limit you to using that oil... . it only limits you to claiming a warranty against them. I have no interest in their warranty and no interest in using a dealer for repairs so i choose to use a fluid that i feel is best.

This is obviously just MY opinion, and will vary with each individual. Do your homework, study up on what you feel is best for yourself and make an educated choice.

Bottom line on your question, they chose one fluid because it is cheaper and benefits them... period.

The earlier model NV-5600 transmissions did have a plaque that said to only use a certain "brand" lube, but I think they must have gotten in trouble with the FTC, because it is unlawful to do this without an explicite waiver.

To Quote from the FTC Regulations, "(c) No warranter of a consumer product may condition his written or implied warranty of such product on the consumer's using, in connection with such product, any article or service (other than article or service provided without charge under the terms of the warranty) which is identified by BRAND, TRADE, or CORPORATE NAME; except that the prohibition of this subsection may be waived if- (1) The warrantor satisfies the commision that the warranted product will FUNCTION properly if the article or service so identified is used in connection with the warranted product, and (2) the commission finds that such waiver is in the puplic intrest. Wayne I think they covered this by saying it is a "lifetime fill". If it is a lifetime fill then they would be in the clear. I only brought this up because some new members might not realize that using any other fluid would void their warranty.

I think (if thats possible) that what we need (and to assist new owners) is a listing of the stock fluids with a list of suitable substitutes. This would make it easier for everyone to make their choice as to the use of fluids. The chart would have to show both 5 & 6 speed units.

Can anyone "knowledgeable" about the oils make a chart and post? It would clear up some of the confusion (ex: with Amsoil alone we could possibly use 2-3 variations, by going to the parts house, we probably could come up with 4-6 depending on what is carried) for us "older" and younger owners.

I know that I need to drop the fluid to change to the filter kit and add the temp probe, but havent made up my mind as what to refill with do to some of the answers I got (from here and other sources).

Fluids for the 6 sp. was discussed at lenth 6-7 months back. You can get the fluid that meets Chrysler specs. for much less. It's Pennzoil Manual Transmission Fluid, about $4. 98 qt. at Auto Zone. It tells you on the bottle to use where Chrysler Part # 4874464 is required and to use for GM Part # 12345349 or # 12345577. Oo.
