How is HP/Torque calculated?

You should get more power and much more torque. The 8v71 is also known as the 318 Detroit. That means it's supposed to have 318 horsepower, but compared to 4 cycle, I don't think it feels like you have as much power. Got to keep 'em wound up the governor all the time to keep 'em moving.

Detriot "V's"

:D I have a 61 GMC Cracker Box i'm in the process (like 8 years now:rolleyes:  ) of stretching the frame for . . get this a 16 v71 i found at a quarry near buy. thing is a monster. gonna put an allison behind it w/ air ride suspension and just play w/ it . might even put a deck on it and haul my ram w/ it. :D :D

not sure of the hp rating but i think the tq was in the 2500 ft lb

range it was a motor from a earth mover. still sitting there waiting for me to pick it up. one day when time is avail. i'll get picks.

The tractor is a sleeper version but the motor will still stick out the rear of the cab at least 5' it orig. had a 6v71 w/ a r-960 10

spd and 4. 44 gears Should be fun if i ever finish it. ;) ;)

Deo, the only thing better is if the Cracker box was a day cab.  that thing would've stuck out a mile:D :D

I have a pic floating around of a guy who was running a mid 80's pete conv. w/ the hood strecthed a full 4' and he was running a 16 V71 w/ 4 turbos!! the cab was chopped 8" also he had 2 hyd lift cyl and a hyd system just to lift the hood. it was red, orange and white. he said he ran up and down the east coast. (this was a few years ago though) he also said it didnt like much RPM... :p :p Wonder why...  if ya come across a mid 70's pete day cab cabover gimme a shout. . looking for one to haul our show trucks. . 44 Pete, 65 narrow nose, and a 78 big hood, all w/ cummins except the big hood( very worked 3408

V-8 cat w/ a 5 and 4 behind it.

Detriots

Will, times the number of cyl's times the cu. per cyl. will get you the displacement, but detriot named there engines acording to

hp ratings instead. (like cummins engines up to the electronic ones) ie; a 318 is actually an 8v71, a 238 is a inline 6-71

Deo, (therabbittree) can prob. fill yopu in on some other particulaers too. my V6 -71 was rated at 230 hp and so on.

Hope this helps a little, Scott
