Interstate reopens after 70-vehicle pileup

None seriously hurt in crash on Pennsylvania-Ohio border

MERCER, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- Authorities reopened Interstate 80 near Pennsylvania's border with Ohio on Sunday night, hours after an estimated 70 vehicles crashed in near-whiteout conditions.

"Luckily, there were no serious injuries in this incident," said Marc Palmiter, supervisor with the Mercer County Department of Public Safety.

Still, at least 17 motorists were taken to area hospitals from a triage area set up at a Quality Inn in Hermitage, Pennsylvania, two miles from the pileup site, said Dr. Sergio Segarra, medical director of the command facility and a specialist in emergency medicine.

Others with more severe injuries were taken directly to hospitals from the crash site, he said.

The accident occurred in the westbound lanes of the coast-to-coast highway shortly before 11:30 a. m. , but traffic was halted in both directions, Segarra said.

The county went on a mass-casualty alert as soon as the crash was reported, with doctors reporting for duty at the hotel, he said.

Eleven patients were sent to Sharon Regional Health System in Sharon, Pennsylvania, and six to Pittsburgh Medical Center in Farrell, some suffering chest pain, others bruises, Segarra said.

Traffic in the eastbound lanes was reopened at 5 p. m. , but westbound lanes weren't reopened until 8:30 p. m. , Pennsylvania Highway Patrol officials said.

"I can't believe nobody was killed -- cars underneath cars," Highway Patrol Cpl. Edward Silloway said. "I've never seen anything like it -- very lucky people. "

No one had been charged by Sunday night, but Silloway said excessive speed was probably to blame.

"Everybody thinks they're invincible, I guess," he said.

"It looked like a battle zone, it really did," said CNN producer Paul Ferguson, who was driving with his brother Bernard in a van about a quarter-mile behind the accident when the pileup began.

Ferguson said he and his brother -- an emergency room physician in New London, Connecticut -- looked for injured people at the scene after walking to the site of the wrecks.

Ferguson said they arrived before the ambulances did, finding four 18-wheelers jackknifed across the road. Dozens of cars had smashed into them and were littered about the crash site, some on their sides.

"It was a vision of hell," Paul Ferguson said.

Melody Glaser, acting general manager of the Quality Inn, spoke to CNN on the phone Sunday afternoon.

"They asked if they could set up our hotel as emergency central and we told them, 'Of course,'" Glaser said shortly after a bus with 19 motorists arrived from the accident site. The injured were given medical help, blankets and towels.

Guests of the hotel, which was about 50 percent occupied, moved their cars to clear the parking lot for emergency vehicles, she said.

"I probably have 20 ambulances here and about five or six fire trucks and rescue vehicles. "

Heavy snow continued to fall during the afternoon, and Glaser said her typical 4-minute drive to work Sunday morning on smaller roads had taken her more than an hour.

Actually, in that neck of the woods on I-80... if you monitor channel 19 on the old CB - there's advertisements for a gentleman's club. :-laf

LOL sounds like a nice stretch to drive. Have to try one of these days! lmao

as for the accident itself. all preventable. some jack*** in a 18-wheeler was doing 60 in whiteout conditions and jackknifed to avoid running over a trooper and stranded motorists on the shoulder... .

Good thing he got the tickets.

Its a nice stretch of road, evenb below Lake Erie snow belt. 50 miles east, is when it starts getting treacherous, with decent size ravines.

Biggest trouble with 80, is it feeds NYC. We should send NYC a bill for the damage.

We had one of them on my end of 80 last year. Not as many vehicles, but several deaths. It was firey. Was on scene for days with my FD cleaning up. White out conditions and the super truckers keep the hammer down.

Heres a link to ours:

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) -- A blinding snowstorm caused three separate chain-reaction crashes Tuesday on Interstate 80 in central Pennsylvania, one of them involving about 50 vehicles and at least four deaths, police said.

Police said that they had not been able to examine all the vehicles because many caught fire and continued to burn.

The first pileup, in both the eastbound and westbound lanes between Bellefonte and Milesburg, occurred about 11:15 a. m. It involved about 30 tractor-trailers and 20 passenger vehicles and killed at least four people, state police said.

State Trooper David White said 17 people were transported to hospitals and fire crews were brought in from four counties.

A second nearby accident in the highway's westbound lanes involved three tractor-trailers, one hauling a mobile home. The two pileups, about 65 miles northwest of Harrisburg, closed the interstate for about 20 miles.

Authorities had hoped to resume traffic in the eastbound lanes Tuesday evening, but White said firefighters were unable to extinguish the burning vehicles; both lanes will probably be closed until Wednesday.

A third accident Tuesday afternoon, involving about 12 tractor-trailers and several smaller vehicles, led to a shutdown of the westbound lanes between Danville and Limestoneville, about 50 miles from the earlier accidents.

Central Pennsylvania were struck by snow squalls Tuesday that reduced visibility to near zero, said Paul Head, a weather service meteorologist.

Actually Matt,

The "Body Shop" is before where that big wreck occured as its off the Emlenton exit and about 30 miles East of the accident. It would have been a good time killer if you heard the squak before you passed it,LOL. BTW,I have no working knowledge of this establishment nor what the gals look like. I seen it on a billboard, yeah,a billboard. This joint years ago when i first started driving used to closer to Ol' Sleddy's house as it used to be located right off old exit 3. Opppss, there I go again with incriminating evidence.

The driver who started this melee lost control while driving below the posted speed limit for the area which is 65mph. There was a PSP officer who was working a disabled car which was partially blocking the right(travel) lane. The officer seen what was starting and he exited stage right into the woods for his own safety according to the driver of ours who was caught up in it. PSP is citing the driver of the truck according to news reports for "driving to fast for conditions" as his radar unit had registered the truck at 55mph. My question define too fast for conditions because whats deemed safe for some is not for others and how did the arresting officer determine that his radar unit capture the speed of the truck as it lost control and not a car which went by at the same time. I guess someone needs to be the scapegoat.

What they should have done was all go to Gene's for dinner since they were that close... ... ..... Andy

You are dating yourself, I heard stories of "Stop 8" (old exit 3) when I was a little kid. When I was old enough to drive, I investigated the stop quite closely. No evidence found. ;) :D There was this one waitresss though.....

Headliners, is the one I think Matt is talking about Andy, and another one in Youngstown. Can't remember the name, but I can describe what the blonde on the billboard looks like!

Anyone remember the "Kish Hotel. "?

Well - I romped right through PA without incident on Sunday. Couldn't even make it to Brookville without having to stop for fuel at my favorite TA. I did make it past Snow Shoe, though...

I didn't have a CB in the '94 - luckily, I didn't need one. It just isn't the same traveling without one...
