I finally blew up my '72 Super Beetle, daily driver. Not intentional however inevitable. I rebuilt up from the long block on July 15 1995. It had 124,250 miles on it. Exhaust valve #4 had been dropping the valve stem for about a year to the point that the valve spring washer was touching the rocker arm. I would adjust the valves about every 1500-miles to keep the gap accurate on #4.
Valve let go, bounced around inside the head, blew a hole the entire interior circumference of #4-piston. (I'll post a picture if anyone interested... ). Got a new engine installed, running well. New Brazil case"#41" all other components new with rebuilt German heads, completed by Steve Tims Enterprises, Riverside CA. Bug is cosmetically restored two years ago, GM 'Arctic White' Valspar by Wyatt's Auto body, San Bernardino, CA.
