I didnt want to hijack the othe r727 thread, so I created this one. cerberusiam mentioned some internal as well as external adjustments that can be made to the transmission to extend life and enhance performance. WHat exactly are those adjustments? Besides a non-stock convertor, of course. My mom is having troubles with her truck sucking fuel (16-17mpg empty- I got 20-22empty 6yrs ago), and the times I've driven it, I'd have to put the pedal halfway to the floor to maintain 60mph. Linkages are all good, cable isnt binding or loose, and I will make 22psi boost, so I'd say the fuel system is at least adequate. truck has 100K on fuel pump rebuild, 20K on injector clean and reset; <8K on transmission rebuild.

Daniel,

Here are some adj from a prior post. I've done them to mine and didn't have anyproblems.

Wow!!! That brings back memories of looking for answers. :p

The adjustments to the line pressures are part of the equation for a long transmission life. That 8 to 10lbs makes a big difference in clutch slip and shift feel. Along side the pressure screw on the VB is another screw that will change the shift point of OD.

Increase the line pressure a bit and move the OD engagement up 5 mph and the OD was a lot happier and lived a lot longer especially if towing was frequent.

Also, the TV adjustment was all too often ignored as a tuning device. Moving that throtle pressure up allowed more rpms hence more pressure on shifts. Far too often it is set too loose and the shifts get lazy and tend to slide into gear under power instead a firm quick apply.

By tweaking the line pressures, OD shift, TV pressure, and the TPS setting one could tune the trans to hold gears longer and spread the shifts out when running a lot of throttle and/or a big load while still shifting quickly and firmer when running empty and less throttle. This really helped the weak spot in the OD and kept it from burning itself up prematurely.

Along with swapping the accumulator piston, leaving out the spring opens up anothr scenario that can be debated, if one felt competent removing the OD an reshimming the OD apply clearances added even more ability to take the power the Cummins was capable of with even mild BOMBing.

Daniel, aside from a bad converter the 100k pump would be my guess about the mpg and throttle position thing. Just because it runs good and makes 22 psi doesn't mean it is doing it efficiently or even correctly. Advancing the throttle and eventually the fueling curve will cover lot of timing and delivery problems but at the expense of mileage. :)

I never was real impressed with the rebuild (pump or transmission, but this time I'm referring to the pump), but it has gotten 20mpg a time or two since then. Not so since the transmission rebuild. And I do concede that just because the fuel is there, doesnt mean it is optimized internally.

Do I need to hook up some gauges, or tune the transmision like I do the pump- by feel and ear? Nevermind HDM48 answered my question in that other thread. One thing the hillbilly rebuilder did right was modify the VB so you get fluid flow to the TC in Park.

I'll look in my book and see where it all is. If I have any questions, I'll be back here to ask.

Thanks guys

I don't get too excited about the trans mods as mine both operate wonderfully with the factory adjustments. I never allow my transmissions to get hot as I know it destroys them. However I do have a major concern with the fact that 7176 aka ATF+3 is no longer available. When guys say that they use Dextron III, it's in a rebuilt or modified transmission, not a OEM unit with lots of miles on it. Therefor I am hesitant to begin dumping in ATF+4 synthetic or Dextron/Mercon and mixing with the ATF+3.

I went back in time and read the posted link about oil, etc. etc... ... ... ... .....

My trannis work great the way they are. I'm not going to gamble on a different oil because someone says it will work. I need more than that. Works in what and under what conditions?????? A DTT rebuild is not the same as an OEM unit, so please compare apples to apples when recommending a switch to ATF+4 or Dextron III. Something to ponder prior to dropping the pan.
