Finally took the time to write this up and post some images of what was the first maintenance check on the truck since I've purchased it used back in April at 62k km. Let me tell you that its been neglected. I don't know if its just me, but I wasn't expecting to see what I saw.
First, the front and rear diff cover bolts were a pain to remove. As you can see from one of the pics, the bolts had red loctite residue or something similar. I think this was the first gear oil change for this truck, more specifically when you have a look at the condition of the oil, didn't look promising. Notice the foaming and color of the gear oil in the pan. I was slightly discouraged at this point. I am still concerned about what can be seen on the rear diff ring gear, it looked like corrosion, but looking more closely it seems the discoloration are deposits from the oil reaching its flash point. Just my theory. I'm asking any geartrain specialist to educate me for that matter, I'm all ears.
The diff cover bolts were cleaned, geezz that red stuff is hard to get off. By the way, the bolts were torqued to 25 ft-lb, as opposed to 30 recommended by shop manual. I know some have torqued them to 20, but I went the extra 5 without any problems.
And last but not least, can anyone tell me if thats what one should expect from a fuel filter when its due for its change after the interval prescribed by the shop manual ??? I was never expecting it to be so... black !
And last, the transfer case oil was drained. On the last pic, it is interesting to see the color of the used oil compared to new. And the xfer case oil is supposed to be changed at 96k km... go figure.
