Pull your rig across scales

All,

I am getting ready to order the new Severe Gear 75W-110 Synthetic Gear Lube from AMSOIL for my 3500. I have been running mobil syn 75W-90 with no issues, just thought this might prove to be a better for towing my (14. 5K) fiver. I have the 4:10 no slip.

looking for some feedback

Thanks

Mike

What does the manual say for the rear Differental? Mine recommends 75-140 for doing towing.

Company I retired from, in there over the road rigs ran 75-90 with no issues, course syntetic was used. 75K-100K lbs per rig.

[Its just what I was told]

I put that oil in my diff already. I haven't towed with it yet but I don't notice A difference yet running solo. On cool morning it don't have that heavy drag as 140 does.

The Amsoil 75W110 is a good compromise between the stock 75W90 and 75W140 (which is recommended for heavy towing). I tow 6-8 times a year, for less then 500 miles on the usual trip. I think the 75W110 will be perfect for my situation, and that's why I put it in my differentials a couple of weeks ago. Here is a photo of the inside, and one of the cover. I added a magnetic drain plug as the manual calls for fluid change every 15K when towing or schedule B use... ;)

Where does it reconmend 75w140? I have never seen that written in any Dodge manual or TSB for the 3rd gens.

In the 2nd gens with Dana Axles it use to recommend 75W140 for heavy towing. In the 3rd gens, with American Axles it only states 75W90, but here is the rub... In the 3rd gens there is essentially no fluid change interval using schedule "A" maintenance. Yet, in schedule "B" (which probably covers most trucks that are regularly used for towing, short commutes, etc) they want you to change it every 15K. There are a lot of us that believe that the 75W110 is a good choice for a synthetic blend between the 75W90 and 74W140. You are free to choose whatever type of axle fluid you want. I just feel you will get better service out of 75W110, which is a little heavier than the 75W90... JMHO...

06 3500 DRW towing just under 26K GCVW 38K miles on truck now switched to 75-140 at 18K miles... . I supose I should change it again... . No issues so far I will run it again when I get around to changing it... .

If running the severe gear fluid in a Clutch type LSD unit you may get clutch chatter. I have had this issue several times. Amsoil recommends there standard gearlube for this. A lot of manufacturers have not developed a clutch material compatible with the new synthetic gear lubes yet. I have had good luck with synthetic if the LS has already been run and broken in with dyno oil and then switch, but to put a new clutch kit or new LSD unit in with synthetic oil has always resulted in clutch chatter for me.
