Cummins in a boat?

Not ready to try it in a Dodge yet, but AS SOON AS you get it all together, running perfectly with no problems, bombed to about 425 hp and 1500 lbs torque, SELL it to me. LOL.

Yes, the truck was a F-250, I call it a 350 now. I did put a Dana 60 under the front end and reinforced the chassis. The orginal framerails were made from a 5 to 6 inch channel. I put 2 x 4 x 0. 25 tubing in the channel. I bolted the tube to the channel excessivly and welded the tube ends together. I made several cross-members between the new frame rails. The beauty of this was the engine mounts were welded to the tubing along with the front spring mounts. It is much easier to weld to the hot rolled steel tubing than the original chassis. All the engine/transmission weight is on a "craddle" directly connected to the suspension, it does not add significant additonal stress to the orginal chassis. It added around 250 lbs to the overall weight, but I wanted to be darn sure it was going to hold up.

Awesome truck C-Series-Man, I think that the first thing you should do after you get the thing running, is to take it to your local navistar service center and tell them your Ford"diesel" seems to be running different. See what they say when they open the hood #ad
ha ha ha!

I am looking forward to putting some of those emblems like under the "Ram 2500" that say "Cummins Intercooled Turbo Diesel" under the F-350 emblem and see what reaction I get.

C-man, do you have a part # or any possible ideas where I could find these decals that say "Cummins Intercooled Turbo Diesel"
I have the ISB in my Hummer but nothing on the outside to denote the hearth of the machine.

Thanks

H

I am just going to go to the Dodge dealer and tell what I want. I don't have the part number. Note: You are going to have to machine the top of the emblem flat. It has an irregular top edge. No big deal, just wanted you to know.

C-man-take it to the Ford dealer-tell em you think the powerstroke is only running on 6 cylinders, and your having a hard time finding #7and 8 injectors. LOL. I figured you converted an F250-350 sounds meaner anyway.

Thanks alot guy, this is exactly what I was looking for. I picked up a few pieces.

Thanks again

C-Series Man,

This rig will be a great conversation piece when done, I know from experience. About 20 + years ago a friend and I installed a 6 cylinder diesel in my '68 El Camino (still have it) and I'm sure we came across some of the same issues you are going through now. After looking at your pictures closely I notice that you don't have the axle and wheels on yet. I see the blocks under the leaf spring but I also noticed that you have a jack under the frame by the fire wall. In our project we also had jack stands at the firewall but we made a mistake by not leaving the tires and wheels on, in that all of the weight of the engine was more or less "hanging out there" . When the tires were put back on and the chassis was let back down (frame flex) we didn't realize that the clearances we had built in were greatly diminished. When we got everything back together and went for a test drive we had a "noise" or clearance problem. The problem was solved but the cause was something that we just overlooked! On your project it appears that you may have more room to work with and you have built up the frame quite a bit, but with the weight of the 8. 3 I was wondering if you have checked for some frame flex? Just wondering!.

I have reinforced the frame with 2x4x1/4" steel tubing. There is absolutly no frame flex. Over the past weekend I pick the truck up by the front cross member with the rear tires on and got no flex. I don't expect that to be an issue. Thanks for the pointer.

My introduction to Diesels was in about 1980, at the height of the gas crunch, my dad's hunting buddy was converting all the Ford flatbed trucks in his paving company to diesels. He was buying old school busses and putting the I6 Perkins engines in his trucks, and having lots of success. So my dad bought two of these engines and he and I proceeded to put them in his 1974 Ford F250 4x4 hunting truck, and then his 1965 Ford 4x2 [F350]. We had to do some minor frame mods and oil pan mods, but they basically fit in just fine. Also used the 5 speed trannies from the busses also. We left the front axle/tiers on, just took off all fron fenders/sheet metal. Talk about one heavy **** engine!

You do realize, that after you get theat truck done, you're simply going to have to drive around the whole country showing it off to all the TDR events #ad

Sometime in the next few years, I will be doing an ISC or a CTA into a 98 2WD dually.

The 8. 3 is basically just a big 5. 9, or maybe the 5. 9 is a little 8. 3. Either way, the engines are very similar in size.

Would be nice to put the electronic engine in there, but the mechanical one has its benefits as well. The only thing I would be concerned about is the amount of shaking the 8. 3 does on shutdown. It would register on seismic charts!

As for transmissions, an Allison would be great, a 6 speed. But fitting one in can, and will, be a challenge. But given a torch, a welder, and an imagination, ANYTHING is possible. That 9-speed is awfully appealing though...

600 HP would be no problem out of an 8. 3... Even 700 is not pushing it. Just think of an 8. 3 in a Dodge with an Allison, and 700 ponies moving it along... Oooooh baby!!!

My goal is to start the project sometime in early 2003, depending on availability of finances. #ad

Wonder if there is a way to retrofit a P7100 on to the ISC... Would be great if it cvould be done...

Speaking of P7100's... I am catching the "P7100 on an ISB" bug... *LOL* Woohooooo!!! If my VP44 ever goes out, I will do the P7100 conversion for sure.

I considered using an electronic 8. 3, the ISC. The amount of communication that is needed between the ECM and Vechile ECM is going to be challenging. You are going to have to do a lot "tricking" to get the engine ecm to be happy. I work at a place where we run them daily in a test cell. It was not easy the couple of times. When you get that worked out, then you are stuck with a CAPS pump and not a Bosch P7100. CAREFUL.

I have seen a P7100 put on a ISC before. It ran pretty well. The only reason we did it was to get the engine to turn 4200 rpm. What is the point if that is your final goal. Use an old C series. It a lot cheap and easier to work on.

Using a mechanical 8. 3 is what I will probably end up doing. More cost effective for sure... Plus they are a pretty abundent motor, so finding a good one will be easy. #ad

Now the question is... Allison or Eaton-Fuller... Hmmm...

I have already decided on the rear end, which will be a re-geared Dana 135 out of an F550. Put 3. 73 gears in there, rather than the 4. 88's. Just need to find a place to get the parts! #ad

Here is how I answered the Allision/Fuller transmission question.

Allsion MD3060 (6 speed w/ OD) used 4500. 00
Fuller 14609A (9 speed w/ OD) used 350. 00

Allision transmissions are cheap until you want one with overdrive. I wanted to overdrive so that I could run the interstate at a reasonable RPM.
