Cummins in a boat?

Dunno why you would NEED an OD transmission with the 8. 3 - it has enough power that you can just gear the differential to equal whatever final ratio will give you the economy you want without worrying about still having enough power to perform well. ON the other hand, *I* already have a US Gear OD - wonder how hard to adapt to the Eaton or Allison... HMMmmmm... .

Anyone have ballpark prices on the mechanical 8. 3 in serviceable condition?

I NEED the overdrive because with 4 wheel drive, 3. 55 is the tallest (numerically lowest) gear that you can get with Ford and hope to find a matching set for the front. With my 35" tires, 3. 55 gear, top gear without overdrive(1:1), 2000 RPM would be 53 MPH. With the same conditions and a 0. 74:1 overdrive, 2000 RPM will be 72 MPH. This is almost dead on the Ram Gear/Speed ratio. You don't have to have overdrive as long as you don't want to get anyway fast. Always be sure to do a gear/speed chart before you buy any transmission/rear end combination. Check for good overlapping and final cruize RPM.

C-Series-Man,
Where did you get the quote for the Allison? I've been quoted around $8000 for a rebuilt MD3060P. I, too, am interested in an approximate cost of a C8. 3 engine in decent shape. Thanks.

Jeez,
If Greenspan had not screwed up the stock market, this would have made a nice project for my tired old Suburban... #ad

I got the transmission quote from "trucks and parts" in Florida www.trucks.com. Check out their website and you can see all the prices for a lot of stuff. Most decent mechanical injection C series are in the $1250. 00 to $1500. 00 range.

What is the latest on your project? Is it finished? Got pics?

man, that's just SEXY!!!

I couldn't see the pics, but just the CONCEPT is making me DROOL!!!!

man, you could go non-OD and run some TALL gears and TALL tires in that baby with no prob...

I didn't realize the fords couldn't go taller than a 3. 55 up front...

either way, COOL truck... in low low low gear, I bet you could LITERALLY pull a house! :D

thanks for living the dreams of others!

Hmmmm an 8. 3 in my crew cab project would take it over the top!!

Better do this project with the B5. 9 and look into the C8. 3 engine swap for another project.

I would like to see some pics of that when you can post them.

That sounded like a great project putting a C-Series 8.3 Cummins in a 1995 Ford F-250. I wonder if it would be possible to do the same type of project except with a (1994-2001) 2nd generation dodge ram or if the 2nd generation dodge rams have too small of an engine compartment and would require even further modifications. I also wasn't aware that jacobs style Jake breaks were even compatible with the 8.3 Cummins.

I have been in desperate search of the intelligence you guys have, particularly C-Series-Man as I'm on the planning stages of a very similar project with the 8.3 CTA and my 1993 F350 CC 4x4, currently on 37 16.5s. Wondering if I could get some current information and some pics. Thank you so much.

Thanks Moparguy. So heartbreaking to see these coms with out the pics. You should see the looks people give me when I tell them what I'm trying to accomplish. Like I just broke out of the farm! So when I found this thread I found someone that was doing/ done exactly the same thing. Except I will be running the 385/85r/20 and a tilt front that gives me a better hole/ wheel well opening.
Well I know it can be done now and with the same objectives - low center of gravity, minimal lift and great drivability.
Well thanks again guys! Impressive forum and clearly well run!
