I got my update about a month ago. Here's a screen shot of the date info1. By the time I get a map update, it is two years out of date. My maps said 2013, so I ordered the 2015 update. They call it the 2015 update because it was released in 2015 but the map data was taken in 2013. It takes two years to put a wrapper on the Garmin data so the 8.4 can read it? That's ridiculous.
https://www.turbodieselregister.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=100666&d=1511360589 note the Q4 2016 but the map date is 20170504, interesting. My truck is a 2014 and the maps were Q1 2013. I figured ANYTHING was an improvement.
2. I want to get the lastest update but it takes the 17.x update to the 8.4 firmware to use the new maps. I've been hearing that FCA is going to load my 8.4 with the OTA update for over 6 months. Hasn't happened.
3. Even if I had the 17.x update for the 8.4, Here.com is reported to be "out of stock" on the map updates. What's the big deal? They should be able to buy USB sticks for less than $5 and load them up in a few minutes each.
4. So there are 500,000 of our trucks out there, 2013-2017. There are trucks well before 2013 that use the same Nav system, and more after 2017, so let's just use the 500,000 number as the number of trucks that have Nav. Oh, I forgot, the same Nav is used in cars and Jeeps so this analysis is even more conservative. 500,000 vehicles with Nav at $150 each. That's $7.5M. 500,000 USB sticks at $5 each is $2.5M. That leaves $5M for development cost and profit. I'm guessing most of that is profit. FCA has a captive audience and that position is enhanced by putting automotive functions and proprietary Apps (Travel Link for one) in the radio head unit so you can't just swap it out.
That's what the fuss is about, as far as I'm concerned....

Yea, yet another Here.com scam. How does one run out of USB sticks? As for the OTA update, you have to have a "good" connection to either Verizion or Sprint (I forget which) long enough for the system to tag the servers and que the update before it will even pop a notice. People NOT in their good coverage are screwed. I read that many in the up North USA and into Canada just do not have carrier signal to get updates. Someone was supposed to be fighting FCA to get that firmware on USB instead. I don't know how they fared in that action. Oh, and you are right, SOMEONE is making a killing of all us Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, RAM owners over many things like this.. Know a good lawyer that would do a BILLION dollar class action? (ROFLOL) Be well and enjoy.. On to the next cluster FXXK.
