If I am not mistaken the stock forged aluminum rims on my 04 are 17x8. When a manufacturer recommends a rim width of 8. 5-11 would it be dangerous or otherwise detrimental to mount said tires on an 8 inch wide rim?

Just looking for info.

70 views and not a single response. I figured if there was someone willing to explain this to me TDR would be the place seeing as how it will involve my CUMMINS powered truck. Maybe there is no one here that knows the answer, that would be sad and disappointing.

Andy,

Don't get your hopes up just because someone (me) has posted on your question. I don't know the answer either.

I would think that you could e-mail any of the major tire manufacturers (from their web sites) to get an answer. Another source could be Dan Richter from Rickson Truck Accessories. He sells the 19. 5" wheels. His number is (800) 587-7633.

Good luck,

Loren

You want the rim width to be 70% to 90% of section width. This is a rule of thumb. The tire may not sit flat on the surface at required pressure, causing uneven wear. I think people mount tires outside this range all the time. Picture the sidewalls of the tire moving in or out to meet that range of rim sizes. Mount one up see if it holds air and does not look odd at required pressure. Does it void a tread life warrantee?

It would be better to use the manufacturer rim width specifications for sure. That said there are many people with 3rd gens running 315s and 35s, even some 37s on the stock 17x8 wheels. I ran 315s for 55,000 miles on stock wheels. Potentially will make them wear a little quicker as they may not sit flat with certain air levels. I would not do it if towing heavy or often, but I did not have any issues with mine.

New Tires coming

Towing... . almost never. These days this truck is my daily driver and on the weekends I like to drive down the Padre Island National Seashore. Thinking about another set of Coopers as they have worn great. I have 53K miles on them and probably will get another 10-15K. I am looking to go up in height to a tire that specs 34. 8" tall and I forgot the width.

I would say go for it. Running a wider tire on a slightly narrower than recommended wheel may cause a little extra wear, but I don't think it's unsafe. I'm running a 315 on factory 16x7s. Also, sidewall height plays a big role in rim width. I used to run 44x19. 5 Boggers on 10. 5" wide wheels and even 395/85R20s on 9" wide wheels. However, I had lots of sidewall to flex to the narrower wheel. If you were running really low profile tires, you would need to really match your wheel and tire combo closely.
