Altenators..Ford? Dodge?

I'm trying to convince a friend of mine to drop an ISB into his old Chevy. I don't know much about the motors, so I would assume that he would need a motor without computer controls, so what year did computer controls start? Also, what transmission would bolt up to the thing and the 205 transfer he has? And finally, would he have any smog issues here in Cali?

You will over load the front axle. It is most likely an Dana 44, a half ton axle. The only difference between a 1/2 and a 3/4, is the hubs and rotors. Everything else is the same. I some rare instances, it could be a Dana 60. The 44 has 2 ball joints holding the knuckle together with 2 nuts. The 60 has 2 four bolt caps at the knuckle.

You would want to stay with a 12V motor to avoid a computer if that is the way you want to go. Newer motors with a computer can be put in also. If I am not mistaken you would want to stay pre 1998. 5 to get the 12V.

I am running a NV4500 from a cummins mated to the chevy 205. Advanced Adapters made the hook up easy. They should have what you need. You will need spline counts for when you call them.

I knew almost nothing when I started the conversion except that I wanted to do it. I did most of the work myself and the TDR site helped a lot. You can use the search option and find a lot of reading and figure out what works best for you.

If you need motor mounts and what not

I have a kit that you do some frame mods and it will drop in along with some other mods .

I dont know about your smog issue check with your DMV , but i have heard they use the year of the engine as reference so its better to be newr than the engine in it

motor mounts

DVolk,

How did you do your motor mounts. I am getting ready to do an 80's model crewcab chevy. Looking for all the info i can before i jump in.

These mounts are designed to work with the GM style mounts (pads)

already in your truck , polyurthane inserts higly recomented ,or after market pads .

there is a crossmember to remove , and one to add and some minor trim jobs

to frame and some peening over of the seem on the transmission tunnel opening

those are the basics , i got lots of pics

Id go with a mechanical power plant unless wireing is your specialty

I've got a 96 motor i'm going to use and planning on using a man. transmission. Did you use a man. trans? If you have a chance send me some of the pics. I will be starting on it soon, i just want to get some ideas before i jump into it.
