80% full regen required?

So I have read all about people having issues with regen etc. I have never got a message yet about needing to regen. This weekend while hunting in the mountains in snow and it being 0 degrees I finally got the 80% full regen message on my EVIC. What a PITA! I wanted to keep hunting but had to drive down the mountain which took an hour, get on a highway and drive for 30 minutes then it went down to 70%. This won't be an issue often for me as I have 19k miles on the truck and average speed according to hours is 43mph. But I do hunt a few times a year where my top speed may never break 10mph for 2 days of travel. How could a farmer own these trucks? I cannot wait for smarty to get something for the 4th Gen. I love my new truck but this message this weekend made me not want to have my truck. Can you no longer travel slow in the mountains in 4x4 low for hours driving through the woods?

My understanding is my '08 with a reflash and in later trucks the engine and software are capable of passive regen when at idle. My C&C doesn't even have a light to indicate dpf full or regen required, as far as I know. I never have seen anything like that so have no experience with it.
