Has anyone had experience good or bad? What are the "weak" links beside operator neglect... . ?

The engine has around 100k and may need some freshning up... .

I would like to use it to either re-power a small komatsu dozzer or a sami... . so your input is welcome... .

i havnt had any expierence with them. but have researched alot on them. they are pretty rare. hard to find parts for. dont have much power. wouldn't be enough for a dozer. as long as owner takes care of them they will stay running. tend to leak oil.

Parts are available, but not too easy of a find. The good thing is all the Japanese diesel engines in the mini pickups (Nissan, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Isuzu) were also used in forklifts of that era. I have serviced them all. Great engines for in a forklift, but gutless for much else. All of them are reliable but would greatly benifit from a turbo if used in a little pickup.

What turbo diesel is in the Dodge old D-50 pickups? I know a guy that had one. He put over 300k on it. He used to use it for hauling combine parts.

That's a 2. 3L Mitsubishi engine. Most of these japanese engines have aluminum cylinder heads, so good cooling system care is a must. They also tend to have timing belts, which should be changed according to schedule or risk severe engine damage if it breaks. They'll last almost forever if well cared for, though.

I had a 1983 D-50 4x4 - the drivetrain was excellent but the truck rusted away around it. Good little engine for a small vehicle. Very fuel efficient too.

Was talking to a guy a few years ago at the parts house who had one. He loved it and bragged about 40+ MPG on the highway. I'd worry about replacements though.

bought the engine ....

I should have been around when engine was removed alot of things were hacked or torched off... . the engine turned over by hand and appears to have experienced alittle winter salt... but mechanically "ok?"... didn't get the transmission(stupid me)... was tired from towing dozzer and having two flats on trailer in route... kinda like a trip from hell...
