86 1 Ton Dodge conversion.

How hard would it be to say drop an 89 cummins and matching automatic transmission into an 86 1 ton dodge. What are the major differences from the 86 to the 89? Just curious. I told my dad it might be cheaper to do this than upgrade trucks. His old 318 gasser and transmission only have about 120,000 on them but just don't have the muscle any more.

i put an 89 6bt and 727 in my 88 ramcharger. ts not hard at all. just get a complete donor truck and its even easier

Do motor mounts need changing? Transmission mounts? Wiring?

my conversion was 4wd so im not certain of the differences on a 2wd. but yes the motor mounts are different, they are bigger but fit in the slots almost perfectly. you will either have to elongate the passenger side slot in the frame or grind off the guide tab on the bottom of the mount. i hade to drill new holes about 3/8 of an " further back for the trans crossmember. you should be able to use the same trans mount. as for the wiring you can use the gas harness and adapt it to the diesel engne but for me it was easier to put in the wiring harness from the donor truck. i just used the diesel underhood harness and used the gas interior harness but i dont have the diesel information center.
