Don't you think $4.00/gallon will put the

Increase in VW Diesel Demand

HI All,

I have a chance on Buying a near mint INternational Med duty flattbed truck... . I know International has a good engine with the dt466 but this particular truck has a low mileage

International 6. 9 (not even turbo'd) coupled to a 5 speed (no 2 speed rear)..... 24 K GVW... . my question is how good would this truck be at or near maz GVW?... . Should I hold out for a dt466 and a 2 sp rear?... . Any and all opinions are appreciated (I'll use the truck mainly to haul some logs and a back hoe and occasionallt some sod)... . For what it's worth the truck has air brakes... . any opinions on this vs hyd brakes?... . I think that moves it to CDL category... . aarg

Thanks.

Andrew

Hold out for a Dt466 and a 9 spd. What your stating for usage The extra gears are worth more than a 5 with a 2spd will ever provide.

I think that a N/A 6. 9 in that application would be pretty tired. I would look for a 466. Also, anything under 26,001 lbs is under CDL.

andrew. the truck you mentioned will get the job done, but thats about it. i had a 1700 dump, with a 7. 3n/a and a 5-2 spd combo,it did pretty well loaded to the max,but without that 2spd rear it would have been a dog. my friend has a 1600 with a 6. 9 and a 5-2 combo,it does pretty good also. however if it were me i would hold out for a truck with a t444e[powerstroke] or even better a dt 466,it dont get any better than that. i have three trucks with 466 engines in them, they have give me zero probs and perform very well. finding one with a nine speed will be hard to do,see plenty of 5-2 combos,6 and 7 spds and my favorite the 13spds,but not any nine's... one more thing, while the air brakes may require a cdl,its a better system overall...

Thanks for the input guys... . I believe from what I've heard here and locally I will try to hold out for a truck with the dt466 and at least a 2 sp rear also.

The 6. 9L is OK in a pickup, but would avoid it on a med. duty truck. Depending on the engine, transmission and diff ratio combo, you won't need a 2-spd axle. Make sure to get a truck with air brakes. MUCH cheaper to maintain, and considerably easier to work on. Parts are easier to get for them.

You won't find a truck with air brakes under 26k gvw. And yes you will need a CDL over 26k. Thats why there are some trucks rated a hair under 26k.

I used to drive an Isuzu FSR that was at 20,500 GVW that had air brakes. No CDL, but anything over 20k, you have to have a med card...

Yep, I think you are right. I finally got the time to look at my CDL handbook and it only mentions that you may be restricted from operating a vehicle with air brakes (L).

Therefore, at least as far is CO is concerned, I stand by my previous comments. Anything under 26,001lbs is fair game. There are also special circumstances for personal use/ not for hire and agriculture use.

Unless I am proven wrong again. :D
