My trans isn’t engaging in park. It will begin to roll as if it were in neutral. Shifts into all other gears without any trouble. However a couple months ago I couldn’t shift it out of first or second up into drive. Haven’t had that issue since, just won’t hold the truck when put in park. Not sure if this is a linkage adjustment or if the tang broke inside the trans. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Any chattering as it is rolling like the pawl is just not engaging all the way? Does the front band adjuster tighten up? The linkage will fall out if band gets too loose and jam the shift linkage.

I would guess the rod that engages the pawl has fallen off (the hard shift from 1st to 2nd). Does the shifter go all the way into park position? bg

There were times when I couldn’t shift the trans out of first or second (manually with shifter). This all seemed to happen when I had the truck parked on a slight incline, applied park brake before putting trans in park, put in park, park brake popped off and truck drifted until it engaged in park, then kept drifting. The trans shifted smoothly as it did before al this occurred and there is no chattering. How hard of a fix is this going to be?

With that info it might have broken the case or just the parking pawl. Gonna have to disassemble it to find the problem.

When you say couldn't shift the trans - as it the trans wouldn't shift or you couldn't move the shifter. If not moving the shifter I'd bet the parking paw/rod came off the valve body.

Here is a pic of the VB - the rod what I'm talking about. It attaches to the shift arm via a "C" clip.

Speaking of the parking pawl rod...when you remove the VB what happens when you can't pull the VB out because the rod is stuck and won't come out? Can you move the driveshaft around a little and get it to release? I removed my VB long ago and remember I had to remove the E Clip and leave the rod in the trans. Not too bad to do but requires a steady hand and someone to hold the VB while you re-install.

Yes, jack up one wheel and rotate slightly to get the pawl to align with the notched on the output shaft and it will pop in and out.

Haven’t gotten the issue fixed yet but now I discover the trans hesitates when shifting from first to second. I don’t think it’s slipping, feels more like a hesitation and then it engages into third a little hard.
