anyone know what it might cost to sleeve on cylinder and rering the other 5 or is better to sleeve them all thanks George

I would not sleeve it if possible. From what I gathered in my days dealing with the 6. 9 Navistar, the probability of cavitation erosion increases dramatically when you sleeve a diesel.

Is it too far out of spec to bore?

not sure I have not seen the eng yeat he said it had a hole burnt in one of the pistons and the cyl was scored and needed sleeved eng has 177000 miles

From what I gather the cavatation problem only affects diesel engines that are manufactured with wet liners from the factory. The 5. 9B doesn't use this type of liner. The procedure to correct this type of problem is as follows: the cylinder is bored enough that a step is created in the bottom of the bore and the diameter is such that the sleave is driven or pressed in. I have seen this tight fit result in the sleave sticking half way home and the fix for that was a CO2 fire extinguisher discharged into the sleave, contracting it to the point that it was seated to the step. Then the sleave is surfaced flush with the block and when the head is installed it clamps the sleave between the step and cylinder head, of course the cylinder is bored to the original diameter and honed for proper piston fit. The only thing I'm not sure of is if this approved by Cummins or the long term durablility of a diesel repaired this way. Maybe a call to Cummins would be in order.

How much do want to spend? The engine can be bored two times using a . 5mm and then the next step would be a 1. 00MM after that you'll need to sleeve. Don't worry about cavition, it doesn't happen on the "B".
