Host Yellowstone Truck Camper Owner

towing at 24K 8-11mpg

Az to Arkansas and back i got about the same... I was towing at 60-65mph but all i could get was 9 mpg avg... .

With the a/c on, i would see a 1-2 mpg drop...

Yesterday I took rt50 which also goes through Monarch pass Co, a 12000' mountain and it was all I could do to keep it at 35 mph because of my EGT. Which was at 1250* to 1350* in stock mode. I think its time for a turbo, which will help in my mpg and tow egt while towing. I mainly use my truck for towing, dont race or pull except my camper. Ive been out here in SD,Co for 3 weeks and loving it.

Sounds about right for a stock truck at 12K feet... They can get upwards of 1400* at sea level when bone stock...

Speaking of towing turbos, I wonder if anyone has put a smaller turbo over the stock one for towing. You would get plenty more air if all you were looking for was more boost/air and only a bit more power than stock... . And wow would it spool quick. .

I don't think you need a turbo, You need a Smarty or Smarty Jr.

It will drop your EGT's like you wouldn't believe.

This year we pulled our 5er from Oregon to Virginia and back. After seeing various sites and visiting family and friends this trip amounted to slightly over 10000 miles. We averaged 11. 4mpg driving 62-65 mpg hand calculated for the trip. Our weight is around 20500 lbs. combined. At first we drove 55-60 through California but we only got 10. 5 for the first two tanks. When we increased our speed in Arizona and eastward the mileage started going up to a best tank of 12. 7. All in all the truck with it's 122000 miles was flawless on this trip as usual!

PS We saw diesel prices from 4. 17 to 5. 10 per gallon:eek:

My truck gets between 10 and 12 pretty normally. I usually scale right 23k lbs and sometimes more. If I am in the hills and really pushing the truck it will go down but overall the trucks gets great mileage for the amount of weight it pulls. I would not say 8mpg is bad if you are driving really hard and in a lot of hilly country I could see 8mpg being somewhat normal. Scotty

Better Milage

TOOK MY 93 WITH THE 5TH WHEAL ON THE BACK HIGHWAYS OF NORTH IDAHO AND N W MONTANA AND GOT 17. 5. TALKED TO A FREND THAT HAD ONE AND HE SUGESTED DRILING 1 IN HOLES IN THE STOCK AIR CLEANER HOUSING SO IT WOULD BREATH BETTER. I PUT 12 HOLES AROUND IT. MY MILAGE WENT FROM 8. 5 TO 17. 5. I ALSO TOOK SOME OF WHAT I READ ABOUT NOT PUSHING IT. IT SEEMED TO WORK. THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT READING. HE ALSO SUGESTED HAVE ING MY INJECTERS REBUILT, HAVENT DONE THAT YET. Oo. Oo. :-laf

9 MPG GAIN by increasing airflow?

That one is a bit suspicious sounding. :--) Another sit I regularly post on has a BS flag in their smiley icons. I think raising the BULL$HIT FLAG is appropriate. My bs meter is pegged. I could see 3-4 maybe but 9... ... well if going by the overhead computer. We all know it neverlies:D!

Just my thoughts. Now if 200 members drilled a dozen 1" holes in aircleaner housing and get 9mpg gain I might be swayed... ... . nope sorry!!

When going on back roads verses the freeway, you tend to have lower RPM and it runs easier. . I know this as I was getting 10 MPG or so going across Nevada on 80 and then I took off on hyway 20 to the 101. all the time on the slower roads, I got, (according to the Overhead. . from I-80) up to 14 MPG. So the slower roads help

Overhead is, at best, somewhat accurate with a stock engine. When you add fueling boxes, injectors, etc. , you can't hope to be even close. Mine says I'm getting 26 mpg while hand calculated is around 10 towing or 16. 5 around town. The mods fool the original computer and it gives false readings.
