I have a 90' 4wd 3-speed auto Dodge diesel. I think it is the 727 TF style transmission and NP205 t-case. I have a spare NV4500 from a 97' 4wd diesel. What is involved in swapping the 5-speed in place of the auto? I want to use the NP205 and I already have the 97' motor and transmission bellhousings. I really just need to know what I need to hook the transmission to the t-case. Thanks for any info.

It will probably pull mine to the track (pull track). It will probably, on occasion, be hooked to the sled. It's getting a Mitchell twin disc like my truck before it goes in. Might as well do it right.

Hey Smoker!

It should just bolt together seeing that the NVG4500HD came out of a 4x4.

My truck was converted to a OEM NVG4500HD last Summer by Quad 4x4 in Roberts, Mt. The NP205 slid right on & bolted up.

Check w/ Dan Guarino @ Quad 4x4 (406-446-2427) or dan@quad4x4.com for advice & speciality parts (bellhousing? &/or crossmember parts)

KEENO,

Was your old transmission a stick or auto? I thought I read somewhere that the input splines on an auto/NP205 and a standard/NP205 were different. I want to be really sure before I tear the truck down. Thanks for all the info guys.

there differant between the auto and stick if you have a good dodge parts have them look up the couple for the two trucks check my reply under conversons George

Sorry Smoker!:)

I fail to consider the implications of the 3 spd. Auto in my reply. Yes, mine was a Getrag to NVG conversion.

I have a call into Dan @ Quad 4x4 and I'll try to get you a more factual answer tomorrow.

Sorry for the confusion... .

Hey Smoker!

83 crew cab has you dialed in... . The input shaft & bearing is smaller for the "auto" NP205.

83 crew cab has the knowledge in this area!

I talked to Dan @ Quad 4x4 and he mentioned that the cases have to be bored to accept the larger bearing & shaft. Maybe 83 CC has a work around for this?

The other option is to have a 'custom' splined adapter made to fit the different spline diameters. This usually relys on a weld to merge for the two different 'custom' halves. Questionable "Cummins Power" integrity?

Dan metioned that you will still need some specialty crossmember parts to make it all happen.

Just what I've learned this AM.

PS: Check out the "NVG4500HD Spec" page on his website for more 'AUTO' to NVG conversion information & considerations.

Hey Smoker,

I might be able to help in your dilemma. I recently bought a wrecked ’92 W250 with a Getrag, NP205 combo. I plan to transplant the drive-train into a ’67 W250 that I also own, except I want to run an automatic.

I am planning for a 47RH transmission, but I don’t know what NP205 input shaft I need. Do you suppose I have the NP205 that you need, and you have the one I need?

83 crew cab, can you verify this? If I was to want to install a 47RH, what NP205 input size would I need, is it the same as the older automatics like Smoker has, or the larger one, same as the Getrag that I have?

Just a thought.

Which side are we boring? Input or output? I looked at a 4x4 NV at Std Transmission the other day and there was no index flange on the end of the adapter.

smccoy,

Let me check and see about swapping. It is dad's truck that I am converting. Does the t-case that you have work properly? How many miles? 83CREWCAB, are you absolutely positive that this trans and t-case will bolt up if I swap out with smccoy? I want to be really sure before I park dad's truck.

smokey yea I just went though this with my crewcab converson the 5sp trucks run a bigger out put shaft on the trans there for you have to have the 205 with the bigger input shaft I found out the hard way and bout a 205 from an out truck and had to go find anothere one that would fit behind the nv4500

Smoker,

I’ll send you an e-mail with the details on the NP205 tonight. You can make decisions from there- I’m in no hurry at all, since this a project truck that I am working on…
