Its your call, but in use only FleetGaurd filters on my Cummins. You can get them at any Cummins Dealership, or most Class A truck dealerships. Fuel filter FS1232, Oil LF3349. youll have to see what the actual capacity of your oil pan is when you fill it for the first time, the book says 12qts, my takes 13qts to reach full line. I run Valvoline Premium Blue 15w-40, used to run Rotella-T, but have got better oil psi with valvoline, and it stays cleaner between changes. the getrag takes 4. 5qts (5w-30) by the book, like said above, put 5. 5 in it. i fill mine through the top cover, removing the shift tower is pretty easy. the NP205 takes 4. 5pints (SAE-30). Rear diff takes 7pints (80w-90), make sure you add the friction modifier to it, i got mine from the dodge dealer, think it was a mopar brand additive.
My truck had sat for 3 years before i bought, with the owner driving it to his mailbox once every few months, so i can tell you that you will be awakening some sleeping monsters. but these trucks are easy to work on and extremely reliable once gone through. the big things that i had issues with, all u-joints where bad. carrier barring shot front brakes were worse than any ive ever seen. transmission and motor mounts shot, id replace them with polly mounts, i dont think they have any for the engine mounts, but you can get them for your transmission. rear wheel cylinders and wheel seals. bearings pitted real bad too. steering shaft rag joint badly worn, still havent tended to that issue yet, borgeson makes a nice aftermarked u-joint shaft. the mount bracket for the steering gear box commonly cracks, front leaf springs totally worn out, along with shocks, alternator went out shortly after i started driving the truck. ECM crapped out, when your dash lights start fritzing out its a good indicator that the ecm is on the way out. I recomend running stanadyne performance blend additive in your fuel. you can look up all the benifits of running it, but from experience, its makes cold starts 100% easier and the engine idle much smoother, less smoke, little more power, adds lubricity to fuel which is the main reason to run it. Id stay away from Diesel Service/Diesel 911 additives, they use acids that are very bad on the pump internals and injectors.
