Howdy,

Have a '92 Cummins Auto and would like to add an aftermarket trans temp gauge. I added a B&M deep trans pan and it had a spot for a sending unit, but would it be better to add it where the factory trans temp sending is, in the transmission line? Does that sensor just run the "hot trans fluid" lite in the dash or does it also let the computer know when the trans is warm enough to shift in OD, or lockup? Or could I just tee in the aftermarket sending unit with the factory sensor?? Know what size fittings I would run? My aftermarket sending unit is 1/4"NPT I think. Any help?

Both functions are run off that sensor. That would be the best place to measure temp to adjust driving. You can install a T and run both sensors off the fitting but the flow is a bit of a dead end there. You really want to have the tips of the senders in the actual flow. For the best results I think a T tapped into the line beyond the sensore fitting is the best bet.
 
I used a street T where the OE sensor is. My ISSPRO sensor seems to operate now. I can see the gauge move up when I climb a hill with my foot in it and drift back down when I remove the load and drive easy.



When I had the gauge sensor in the pan like is recommended, the gauge seldom moved. I don't understend why you'd want to know the temp of oil in the pan, but that seems to be the recomendation. I like much better knowing the temp of oil comming out of the transmission itself, thus the street T.



BTW, you can buy the sensor adapter that CLAMPS to the outside of the line. Wonder how well that works... ... ... ... ... ... ..... ? I'd say the sensor in the "dead end oil" would be the easiest and reliable.

I like your recommendation, tee it off the OE trans sensor, the funny thing is too the trans pan is so thick where the sensor would screw it, it barely even goes into the oil! Oil pretty much goes into the "recess" of the sending unit hole. . Even with the longest sending unit probe that I could find. Probably more actually the temp of the trans oil pan. NExt on the 'to-do' list
