I have a line on a Clean 92 CTD, Auto, 136K, 1 Owner. , 4x4 X Cab.

It really clean but has had the cab replaced due to a Tree falling on it..... looks like a good job on the cab swap. you basically cant tell its been replaced, the only reason I know is because he told me. Based on this I sure it has a salvage title... . not that it matters to me. Hes also never replaced the transmission... ... ..... hmm

The guy wants 7K OBO and I need some opinions.

Thanks All.

On the Reno side of the hill, the same truck would go quickly for 10k (without a damage history. ) If its what you want and seems well maintained, go for it. I'm with CB though - offer him 6500 and see what happens.

Don't know about your area, but around here a salvage titile is a B**ch to change and get proper registration.

Do-able, but a real PIA.

Wouldn't bother me for that kind of $$ though. Probably a decent buy.

You might want to check with your insurance company. Some get a little picky on salvage titles.

In my area a salvage title vehicle will be about half the price of a non salvage title vehicle on resale.

Check to see if the title is salvaged. The cab was completely changed on my 91 due to a wreck and the title is still clean. alonzo

How?

If someone changed the serial plates on the cabs. Then they have broken Indiana law. If it is found by one of the police officers during a traffic stop. It will lead into a big can of worms.

If they didn't change out the serial plates. Then the frame to body numbers will be off. This is against Indiana law also. When ever the cab to frames numbers do not match. You need a home built title.

I know a few people that have tried this. After it was all said and done. They had wished that they had done it right. their rigs were towed in and stayed at the impound lots until all paper work had been done properly. Most of the times it takes about 30 days to change the paper work over. So with the impound fees. It gets real expensive.

thanks for the warning. I'll have to check it out. It was done by a "professional" body shop so I don't know what is up. thanks, alonzo

I would check into it very close. If the cab was changed. The least it should have a home built title.

If you would get caught with the cab swap. The way the state looks at it is. The truck would be state properity till you could prove ownership and correct paper work. This is one area they do not play games.

My understanding on VIN changes are it is legal as long as a body shop does it for repair purposes. Also if a truck is new enough when the cab change is done a "body in white" is ordered and it comes wiithout vin and the old is transfered to it. ??????

Ditto with Paychk around here.

It wasn't "SALVAGED" the original owner had it fixed by a shop. They should have got a donor cab, even if it was used, and put the vin tag from the truck being repaired on it.

If it was crushed and the owner didn't want it anymore, sold to INS as salvage, sold as salvage vehicle, then fixed, then it is a different story. Around here.

Indiana DMV laws do not allow this. The VIN plate is to never be removed and installed on something else. If a body in white is used. Then the state will issue you numbers to be stamped in.

To give you an idea. A place I used to work at had a VIN plate fall off of a old Frehauf pnumatic trailer. It took almost 30 days to get state approval to have a new replacement plate made. Then it had to be installed at the a Frehauf dealer with a police officer present. Now just think what they do when they find a ilegal swap.

Once I had an Aries K (hey it had a hemi) I bought it from a towing yard. they had hauled it in abandoned. I just used it to drive back and forth to work, I could not get a title for it back then. I went to a salvage yard and bought another one rusted out body and took the vin tag off, glued it OVER the original, went and got the inspection and got tags. Mine was white like an 81 the new title was like a brown 84!!!! Nobody ever said anything about it, who would care in that case, it was a K car!!!!!

Sorry to get off track but it reminded me of it, Arkansas must be pretty lieneant!!!
