Hi Guys,
I need some information for a friend of mine that owns a 92 1 ton. He has been quoted $2000 to do some upgrades(he didn't tell me what). He uses the truck to pull a 34' 5th wheel,it has an A/T that has been rebuilt, but other than that it is bone stock. I need some information that I can tell him. Everything from exhaust, injectors, cam plate,,what ever.

Thanks
Rick

Rick, I would tell him to first do the diaphram adjustment. I have a 92 3/4 ton and this made a very noticible improvement. I also have the A/T and the sweet spot in the power band is short to say the least. This mod. helped to move the usable power down in the RPM curve. He also has the big (21 cm) exhaust housing, he needs the 18. 5 cm (91, 93) housing and even better would be the 16 cm housing. The diaphram can be done for free and the housing is around $150. 00, or less if he can locate a used one. I have the PW injectors but have not installed yet. By others post they make a nice improvement. Others have their pumps turned up (full fuel adjustment). If he is looking for longevity, he may want to go the injector route instead of the full fuel adjustment since the VE pump on our trucks is just about at its limits (per others post as I am not a mechanic). I am running a straight pipe exhaust, it is a little loud but I like it.

Remember that the weak link is the A/T, and as power goes up the trans is more apt to start slipping (Torque Converter). Hopefully others will fill in the blanks and get your buddy heading in the right direction.

Rick, I would also suggest getting some gauges installed to see the difference these mods make but mostly for heat. Exhaust Temp is the most important (EGT), Then maybe a good Turbo (Boost). The TST site has a wonderful 16 cm2 turbo housing that helped my 92 3/4 ton pickup some much needed help. It mostly allows the engine to spool up faster. I also have turned up the fuel screw and made adjustments to the star wheel. Different as night and day. Dropped 4 seconds for my 0 - 60 mph speeds by turning a little screw here and adjustment there. I do agree though, fuel pump takes a beating and the best it injectors which gives much more power leaving pump stock then turning the screw up (from what I hear). TST, among others I'm sure, makes a upgrade kit for the transmission and isn't too bad $$ wise. Helps shifty but it is NOT a replacement for the torque converter, just a shift kit.

Gauges, gauges, etc. . for the money (Free!!) I think I would still start with modest pump adjustments. Next, and at the same time, uprate injectors and smaller turbo exhaust housing. If the truck still has the 21. 5cm housing on it then the jump down to the 16cm will be most noticable. (in my case i went from 18. 5-16 which i found a bit too subtle)
From this point the sky's the limit. You will likely want to consider a high flow airfilter of one sort or another. If you go too radical, exhaust systems need to be looked at as well due to the restrictive nature of the stock system. These things need to be able to breath properly and the original is like an asthmatic in a marathon... crappy.

With the upgrades that you suggested what would the out of pocket $$$$ be?? I know this is one of the questions that he will ask. To my understanding this truck is choked down with stock configuration. One of the first things that need to happen is a set of guages need to be added to the truck to monitor the vitals(pyrometer, boost and trans temp).

Rick, I think for basic upgrades your looking at approximately $710 US.
Pyro & Boost $220
Injectors $240
16cm housing $150

Aside form the aforementioned things by Al I would definately go with a K&N air filter and a larger exhaust-31/2" or better. The turbo made my truck come alive-compared to stock-If I had to do it over again I'd go guages(boost&Pyro), 16cm turbo, exhaust& Air filter, pump recalibration or at least fuel adjustment and injectors. This seems like alot of bells and whistles, but my 91. 5 is a monster compared to what it was in stock configuration.
