Intermittently Dies While Driving

Cowl drainage

Hello all, I am struggling with fuel system issues on my 92 cummins truck. I am rather certain it is fuel. Here are the symptoms:

At the first start of the day (has been 60-70 ish in the mornings), pumps out a lot of white/grey smoke. Smells awful, like very poorly burned fuel. It also misses pretty significantly during this time. Goes away when I'm driving down the road.

Sometimes, after I've sat at a light for a minute or 2 (at operating temperature) it will puff the same nasty smoke as I pull off from the light. But it only does this sometimes, other times it's a black puff, and then sometimes no smoke at all.

I have checked the turbo for oil leaks hot and cold side, nothing. I never have to add oil between changes, even with a pretty significant rear main leak. No significant blow by.

What I have replaced/repaired:
- new sending unit with 1/2" an push lock lines. Everything is dry and leak free.
- New oem injectors 20k miles ago
- rebuilt injection pump 500 miles ago

The issue has been getting progressively worse, and the new pump didn't help the smoking issue much at all.

The only thought I have left is, maybe the weak old injection pump was making a bit of metal and junked the new injectors? The fuel return banjo bolt on the old injection pump did have a little bit of sparkles in it when I tapped it on a paper towel.

I am tired of throwing time and money at this thing. Has anyone else had a similar issue? Thanks to all.
