I recently had my auto rebuilt and now have a bad drain back problem. AAMCO says it is because the check valve in the high pressure cooler line is missing, but Dodge says there never was one until '94. I would appreciate any help with this problem.

The AAMCO goobers strike again. Those guys are lucky to be able to put a transmission in the right way.

The 518 had an inherent drain back problem. There was no check valve unless it was jury rigged in there.

In this case Dodge is right and AAMCO is pooched. Just idle the trans in park for a couple of minutes after starting it. If that doesn't cure the problem take it back quick and make them fix it. Good luck.

you are better off idling in neutral, the transmission fluid circulates faster in that position. That is also where the manual states to check fluid level. Most of the good shift kits add in the anti-drain back valve, as part of the enhancements.

Thanks for the info. I am currently idling in neutral for a while to circulate fluid. The problem I have is that it did not have the problem of drainback after just a couple hours before the rebuild. What shift kit is a good one to use.

Bob.

If the problem started after AAMCO screwed... I mean, worked on your transmission, I'd say they need to make it right or refund your money.

I have the TFOD-Diesel shift kit in mine and like it. It doesn't give the neck-snapping shifts that many performance kits give (I didn't want a harsh shift) but it did firm things up. Between that and the converter I'm really happy with how mine turned out.

It's been said before and I'll say it again: Avoid the "chain" shops and find a reputable, independently owned shop. I won't even let AAMCO and thier kind change my fluid. If you're in the Tucson area I can recommend an excellent shop. :)
