93 auto transmission problem

93 3/4 ton with 3. 54 gears,Reg cab long bed 4x4 automatic with 150k miles Tire size: 285x75R16



Problem: Will not shift into overdrive until you back off on power. Once you back off on the power, it will shift into OD and stay. Acts like an "old style" modulator valve bad. Replaced TPS, no help. Anyone have any suggestions?

What voltage did you setup the TPS at?



Have you checked the trans kickdown cable to see if it was moving freely?



At what rpm/speed will it upshift without letting up?

Hey, Stick a thin 10mm wrench under tps bracket (on plastic piece) and turn clockwise a smidge. This will lower your OD shift point.

Another TPS Problem, eh BushWakr

By the way my truck is currently in the Transmission Shop because I finally gave up on the new TPS that didn't help. So far they have had it for 3 days. Today they finally took the rear of the transmission off and found the large O ring around a piston letting fluid pass by until around 60 mph before it would generate enough pressure to shift into OD. So far the bill is $800 and counting. Not to mention the $175 for the TPS that didn't need replacing. I will give a complete run down on the results when I get it back. Stay Tuned.

Just a side note: When I went to the Dealer to inquire about a new TPS he told me not to buy one from any "After Market" source because they are "Junk". All of the TPS problems we have mentioned in "First Generation Trucks" are OEM sensors. WHO IS DEALING IN JUNK?

That is a major pressure leak to be sure...

Funny but Bill K. has been talking about this sort of thing (pressure leaks) for a while now.

I'm real sorry to hear about the end result(s) It would have been nice to settle it with the TPS. I'm sorry I wasn't able to be of more or better help Walmor.

So many times it is the TPS and/or the throttle valve cable... . rats!



I'd like to suggest/ask/beg, that you do all the rest of the 1st Gen Auto owners a big favour.....

Would you consider compiling all your symptoms, tests, experiences with, and as much as you can in the 'time line' then post it.

I'm confident that we may have an FAQ and/or a "How To" coming to this Forum, specifically for our trucks. If that is the case we could REALLY use the whole ugly story with end results.



In fact, I'd like to encourage ALL the 1st Gen guys to do exactly the same thing.

If we can each pick just one thing that took a lot of effort/searching/ trial and error to fix, then type it up and post it, we'll have one heck of compilation of valuable and specific topics.

TPS the dreaded Sensor

BushWakr, I would love to but you are only allowed 10000 letters to describe the problem. (just kidding). I will compile an abreveated version of my trip down TPS/ Transmission/ Speed Sensor/ Throttle Linkage adjustment/ Governor or what ever, when it is all said and done. That is providing that I don't have to hock my computer to pay the bill.

Again, let me off a sincere apology for not being able to help you nail this one down. I honestly thought that we were all on the right track, given the history of symptoms that can be directly related to the TPS/throttle valve cable.



I really hate it when I send someone down the wrong trail... it wastes time and energy not to mention $$$$,,, again sorry Walt.



I'll try to have a more open mind the next time similar symptoms are described, and keep in mind your experience/results.
