Hi,

I am looking for a bit of help in deciding what to do with my truck. It has around 300,000 miles on the engine but was running well until recently. It lost power on a small hill. Felt like it would not reach full rpm, dead pedal and only about 20 mph. Stopped the truck and looked under the hood for an obvious linkage problem but all was OK. Went to start the truck and it cranked over like normal, then it clunked and then cranked over like it had no fuel (fast crank over). A shop looked at it and said I need a new injection pump and lift pump to the tune of $4800...ouch. I love the truck and want to fix it but the cost to repair is steep.

So, here are a few questions.

How hard is it to swap out the injection pump and lift pump? Is it a DYI doable job? FYI, I am not a mechanic but capable of basic part replacement.
The price quote was for pumps from Dodge $2650 for the injection pump & around $400 for the lift pump. Are there good non OEM replacement parts available for a California truck. Are there any test I can perform to verify that the injector pump is the problem?

Any thought on how to proceed are welcome. It is a clean truck and I would like to get her back on the road.

Thank you,

A lift pump should be around $100 and an injection pump from a reputable shop should be in the $1000 range. I would verify the lift pump is getting fuel to the injection pump by cracking the line loose that feeds the injection pump. I know there have been write ups in the tdr for pump replacement recently but not sure what issue. It is not too bad with a few special tools. You may also want to verify the cam is turning to make sure you didn't have a case bolt or killer dowel pin come out. When the lift pump is out verify the cam lobe turns if the engine is cranked over.
I would expect an independent shop would be around $2000 parts and labor for both pumps.

Wow, they say you coming with that problem. Utterly ridiculous prices.

Depending on how many updates and bad the internal parts a rebuild on your IP shoould run no more than $1200 for almost new internals. These pumps are not available new assembly but all th einternals are to rebuild. You need to look for a certified Bosch injection shop and have a discussion with them first to see what it may cost to rebuild.

You may or may not need and IP if the LP has gone bad. They are available for around $200 form Genos Garage IIRC. Been a while since I used the stock style so not sure.

I would check and see if the LP is working first then go rfrom there. There is a bleeder on the fuel filter base than you can open to see if fuel is flowing from the LP. Either manually or with the starter check to see if you have fuel past the filter.

Thanks for the quick reply. It looks like I'll be testing the lift pump as suggested. I'll let you know how it goes.
By the way, this is the first time I've used this site and WOW.

Thanks again,

Bill

As staed above, lift pumps are fairly low cost, around $100 from any auto parts store. Be advised you may have to wait a day for one as most don't stock parts for these old trucks.

Have the same rig... I had injection pump rebuilt by "Diesel Injection Service" San Bernardino, a few years ago. I know it's kinda a distance for you. Their number: 909-885-0590, (no affiliation w/the company, expect the $1400.00 installment :-laf). They did a good job. I replaced my lift- pump long before the pump rebuild. Bought it from Cummins, not too expensive $45-65, if I recall correct. I hope they can at least direct you to a Certified Bosch Dealer in your area. Beautiful area BTW. I've been to the Steam Engine/Railway Museum.

Happy Holidays. Keep your truck, you'll be glad you did. :D Patrick.

genosgarage.com sell the updated lift pump for your 93 for $42. get a couple filters from them while your at it. just changed mine and its a hour job with simple hand tools. hardest part was the upper steel fuel line to the filter. had to remove it with the pump then give it a little heat to free it up. metro injection in Agawam mass will rebuild your injection pump for under a grand. they do excellent work with fast turn around. maybe 2 days to rebuild it. just did one in my buddys 6.2 army 5 quarter ton chevy. looked like a brand new unit after rebuild. $540.00 for his pump.

I don't know how the place that quoted you sleeps at night! that's just wrong!! here is a link to metro. they are all over: http://www.midwestfuelinjection.com/

Thanks to all the helpful suggestions I was able to get my truck up and running for far less than the original quote. As suggested, I changed the fuel filter and verified that the lift pump was moving fuel to the injection pump. I put it back together and it would not run. I figured it had air in the injection lines so, due to limited facilities and fear of messing it up, I took it to a local mechanic. Wade at Rolling Renches in Vista Ca. bled the injection system and the truck started up and runs like a champ. Three hours of labor for troubleshooting and injection service, an oil change and valve adjustment for under $400.

Thanks to everyone that offered suggestions. The end result is I have a working truck, a very valuable source of information with TDR and an honest mechanic. I wish all my problems were solved so nicely.

Happy New Year To All

I've got a '93 W250 w/Cummins 6B59 intercolled motor w/Bosch VP-14 injector pump. The pump is leaking diesel; but runs OK. I'm thinking the return line seal/o-ring is bad- but don't want to tear it down... is there a way access the return line w/o removing the pump and injector plumbing? W/O special tools, I'm gunshy from messing with the pump. Thanks for any guidanced. Hank

If it is leaking it needs a reseal. The o-ring on the plate on the block side is usually the next place to leak then you have to pull it.

cerberuslam, where can one get a reseal kit?? Bosch doesn't seem to be free with it's parts kits; Cummins is not a help either. In order to get at the return line, I think I have to remove the feed lines from the pump; therefore, need the o-rings for them also. Is there a reseal kit around that fits the bill? Thanks, hankg

A Bosch rebuilder will be able to get the kits with a CPL number. Not going to be free but it is the one source I trust.
