2nd (24V) or 3rd Generation for Girlfriend?

Quick question for any of you transmission gurus. While riding in a friends ford the auto transmission gave out. Yes i know... its a ford but the same guy also owns a 24valve with a P-pump, so that makes up for it a little!! Coming out of a turn the transmission downshifts and bangs second gear and then nothing. No gears, no reverse but park still works. It felt like something snapped. I am guessing its not the output shaft because park still works. We just got done pulling the trans and from what i can see of the input shafts, look OK. Could something of broken inside the converter or does this sound like a shaft or something inside the trans itself has let go? Any info would be appreciated.

My guess would be the input shaft (Haynes book calls it the direct drive shaft, for what ever that is worth) or the front pump (gear pump) maybe? If there are other noises there, maybe the flex plate gave up.
