If you are rebuilding it, be sure and put new synchros in. It has been my experience that this is the root of most popping out of gear troubles. Whatever you do, if you chooose to reuse the old ones, make VERY sure that they wind up on the original gear or you will have twice as many gears that jump. You need not repeat my mistakes. (^;

getrag

I've spoken to several people about the Getrag problem and I 'll let you know what I found out. A friend of mine had his rebuilt by a guy who specializes in foreign transmission's instead of installing a new one under warranty. The transmission guy said that the problem was that the Getrag(like apparently most German trans. ) use a tapered roller bearing instead of a ball bearing like American transmission's. The fix is to pull the pto cover and measure the counter-shaft end play. Then pull the counter-shaft cover on the back of the transmission and remove or add shims to clear up the end-play and maybe add acouple thou worth of bearing pre-load. As the trans case seasons it usually loses the bearing preload causing excessive end play and a ruined bearing. I am going to be trying this in the next week or two. Hope this helps. By the way if you are rebuilding the trans just make sure the bearing are right, now that the case is seasoned it should be good to go.
