93 one Ton Quits Running, Need Help

My brother-in-law's 93 stock one ton has quit on him. He said it was running fine, then while traveling down the highway it started running rough and making white smoke. He got it home and got it to start a couple of more times, but it ran real rough and made lots of white smoke. Now it will not even start at all. I am not sure how many miles are on it, but I am sure over 100,000.

He did say that the pump had been rebuilt before he bought the truck a couple months ago. What do you guys think? Any help would be appreciated.

Oh yea, He said the oil pressure and level and the coolant level have been and are still good.

It SOUNDS like he went to a gas station and they put GAS in it.

That's my first impression, with no other data, except your description.

The next item is to make sure you have fuel flow. Is there any fuel in the truck? (I've run out before, when the fuel gauge stuck) crack the bleed (usually a small plug on the filter outlet banjo fitting) and pump the supply pump. You should get straight fuel, no foam.

If no fuel, make sure the truck's not out, and then look at the rubber hoses underneath for cracks / breaks.

If you have fuel, solid straight fuel, then suspect your pump.

Next agenda item to check out is to pull the on/off solenoid off the top of the head next to the lines and put a magnet down there to see if there's any chips or metal fines. Check it all out for junk, if you find anything metal, have a shop pull the pump and a pump shop look into it.

Hi, You might have him start by bleeding the fuel lines all the way to the injectors. If that doesn't do it, try replacing the fuel filter as it doesn't sound like the engine is getting much fuel. Try the lift pump while bleeding system, too make sure its picking up the fuel from tank.

If none of the above work, empty tank, as fuel might be cause also.

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like it is the pump. He has taken it in to a shop and will know more later. I will try and remember to post the outcome. Thanks again.

Update on problem/fix

Well, it wasn't good. The shop put in a rebuilt fuel pump and new injectors, and then told him there were still other problems. He ended up paying them about $2,000 and bringing it home to work on his self. I am not sure about this, but I think he said some nut had backed off on the fuel pump timing gear and caused damage to that gear and the gear on the cam. He said looked like it would be at least another $500 for the parts and no telling what it would have cost if the shop would have done the labor. Anything he needs to do or check while he has it all tore apart?
