Two days ago (Saturday) I replaced the timing belt and tensioner on a 93 Toyota Carolla. It has a 1. 4l with a 5 speed. I replaced the belt because it skipped 1 tooth. Everything went well. New belt properly tensioned, new tensioner. Pullies and gears are in good shape. I put it all back together, set the timing (This engine has manually adjustable timing) and it ran perfect. Two days later, the lady called me. She said it was running rough again. I checked the timing, and it was way out. I think it (the belt) jumped a tooth again.

I readjusted the timing and it ran much better, just not correctly. It still has a miss off idle if you grab the throttle and pull it open. I have also replaced cap, rotor, plugs, wires. All parts are purchaced through NAPA.

Does any body have any ideas why this could have happened. I have been doing professional mechanics since I was in 10th grade in high school, though now I am a Computer Professional. It is annoying that this would happen. Any ideas would help.

I am not super familar with Toyota engines, if you read my profile, you will see that I worked on larger noiser motors, not these little gas efficent (Gas Period) engines.

Did you inspect the pulleys well while replacing the belts? Sometimes one or both can be worn on one side of the cog causing the belt to jump.

Did you check the belt guides? These should always be replaced with belts. Sometimes one may get stuck and not hold the prober tension on the belt. Just a thought.
