I heard that there is a difference between the different years in the pump here. I located a engine and he said that it is a 95 or a 96. I was just wondering how can I tell if I am getting a 96-98 pump or engine

The 215 pumps which are 96 to 98 have the numbers 813 or ?(there are two code numbers you have to look for) in the code I believe the last part of the code. Don't know the 180 pump numbers but somebody does (they will know the other number for 215 pump too).

There should be a plate on drivers side of engine on the timing case it should have 180 or 215 down as the horse power if it is a 96 to 98 engine.
 
thanks. I did not want to drive 1 hour to find this out. I wanr to call him tommorrow and see what he can tell me. Well here is another question. If I want to bump the 95-96 engine to the 215 hp motor what would I have to do? Or is it not worth the hassel?

215 Pumps are 887 and 913!

The last 3 digits of the Bosch PN# for a 215hp pump are 887 and 913, the 180hp numbers are 885 and 911, the smaller 160hp and 175hp pumps are the same model but range in numbers including 838, 841, 854 etc. '94-95 automatics and manuals have 5x0. 0090" injectors, '96-98 automatics have 5x0. 0095" injectors, and '96-98 manuals have 5x0. 010" injectors. The '94-95 pistons also have a lower top ring landing, none of these things should sway your opinion too much.

Why is that?



Also the reason I am asking is that I was told that the newer 215hp pumps flow more so if I want to build hp the older pumps pumps would not work.



Also if I wanted to get the older 160 hp-175hp pump or engine so to speak to make it a 215 hp engine you would have to buy injectors and pump. Is this right or wrong?



The engine I found is for a automatic.

There is a small placard on the side of the pump, which is, unfortunately, behind the throttle linkage assembly. I don't think you can see it with a mirror and light, but possiblly. Fortunately, only 3 bolts hold it on - 10 mm I believe. It can then be swung away a bit to see the placard.

I don't think the automatics came with a 215 pump. I have a 1994 6bta but swapped in a 913 pump and DDPIII injectors so yes, you can swap out the pump and injectors for ones that flow more fuel, burn cleaner, and run smoother. I too have been told the 1994 pistons are slightly inferior but i don't remember why. I'm pretty tough on my truck and i don't suspect you'd have issues with the pistons under moderate power modifications.

If you want high performance pistons i think you'd be looking at ceramic coating. Swapping to a 215 pump can provide a significant increase in power. If you choose to upgrade injectors, i would go ahead and step into something bigger than 215s.

Well here is the thing. I want to start with the right engine with the right stuff on it so I don't say later on " well I should of got this engine instead".



So if I am right I need a 97-98 engine to do this? I just want to make the right decision before I spend money on this project.
 
Any P7100 equipped motor will provide enough hp for what you are looking by my estimates, the 215hp and 180hp pumps do use a better camshaft than the 175hp and 160hp pumps. The 215hp pump is nice for street use without needing as much rack travel or timing advance, but they are limited at higher rack movement and RPM than the flat-top plunger pumps.
 
I think you could still get at least 800 hp from a 1994 engine with a 215 pump for fueling and a big turbo, not having to tear into the engine beyond head studs, which you'll want to do regardless of year. If you want more power than that you will probably be sending your pump off and will have already bought huge injectors anyway. Last i checked these engines are rated to 66,000 GCVW so it takes a lot to do them wrong. Later year California trucks may have emissions that you might end up removing. I don't think you'll be unhappy with any basic block, just swapping fuel and air parts.
 
update...got my new engine

thansk for all the help guys. :) I got my new engine today. sweet. Now I have to get my trans and transfer stuff. I got the info and going to post it on a new post.
