Hello! This is my first post on the TDR. I'd like to get info on how to take my mirrors apart so that I can find how to keep my drivers side mirror from wobbling when I go down the road. I have a SLT Laramie pkg that was equipt with electric mirrors. The drivers side mirror will move from left to right, but won't move up and down, and the passengers side will move up and down, but not left too right. Would the electric motors be worn out or just a bad short in the control switch. Anyone with Ideas is appretiated, Thanks :)

If the chrome tube that goes into the plastic on the door is wobbly, remove the door panel, remove the mirror, take off the gasket, see 4 torx screws, usually 1 or more are stripped out. Tap the hole to 1/4 - 20 and install Allen head bolts the same length as the Torx screws with lock washers. Tighten them down to the thickness of a penny between the clamp and the base. Just did mine today, worked great, rock solid now.

Thanks Dezzel 1 My support arm and mirror housing are fine, it's the mirror it self that flickers when driving. Are there rubber grommets inside that can be replaced?

Did the fix about replacing the bolts work? Have a '98. 5 and have noticed since day 1 that both mirrors will shake while going down the road. Been back to the dealer and all that accomplished was down time without the truck and replacement of the mirror. Worked for a little bit but after a period of time the shaking of the mirror was back. Have not had the mirror not move in any direction though. Posted another question about this and some replies are about a brace for the mirror in the door somewhere.

Yes the bolt replacement as outlined works very well, I have done 2 trucks this way and they are very solid. This only applies when the looseness is where the chrome arm disappears into the black mount on the door, where the front to rear pivot takes place.

shaking mirrors

Sure is great having pictures. Is there any tricks to removing the door panel?

Thanks RJ

Go to any auto parts store and get a tool that looks like a little nail puller with a screwdriver handle, it takes all the pain out of removeing the door clips plus you can usually reuse the clips doing it this way. Mine cost about $6. 00

The picture sure helps show where to tap and all that. In looking at picture though I wonder if the mounting area has been changed from the '97 to the '98? There is no chrome arm coming from the mirror to the door. There is though a somewhat similar arrangement that hopefully will be the same once the door is apart to look at the internals. It sure will be nice to get these mirrors to stop shaking!!!
