Guys, the power bug is about to bite me! I tow a '22 fifth wheel and need some more power. I intend to use the TST #10 plate to start with and a GSK to extend the range of power. After that wears off, what delivery valves, air filters, timing changes and injectors do I need to reach or go over the 300 H. P. mark? I am reading all auto trans. posts and will make that choice when I need to.

What kind of money are we talking about for parts alone to acomplish this?

I do drive this truck daily so it has to remain reliable and has to tow without EGT problems!

Is there a charts somewhere to answer questions about power increases with just injectors, or just delivery valves?

Thanks in advance for your time and opinions.

Ronco, you may want to consider a #6TST plate rather than the 10. The 11 and 10 plates are designed for the 180 and 215hp pumps installed in the 96 thru early 98 trucks.

94 and 95 trucks had 160 hp (auto trans) and 175 hp (std. trans) pumps. The plates we run (TST) on stockish trucks are the #8 for 230hp at 605 ft. lbs in a standard trans truck, or #6 for the same hp/ft. lbs with a auto truck.

It's been said many times, but first add gauge's, then power. In your shoes, I'd try the #6 plate, 3kgsk, or the 4kgsk that some report works better. Then see if I need more.

Egt's and the transmission will be priorities after you add fuel. A search will on each will yield lots of reading. Just remember, you've gotta add air to burn the additional fuel, and the stock trans is gonna be a weak link if you upgrade the power level above the recommendation above. If the trans has 100k plus miles and is still stock, it may have problems anyway.

Cost; about $600 for 70 additional rearwheel hp.

See my sig for what has worked fairly well for my needs. I'm above the 300hp mark and have about a grand in powerupgrades. I did buy my 215hp injectors used from a fellow member for $150.

Good luck, Ronnie

Moparguy, thanks for the advice. The #10 TST plate is considered the towing plate. Matched with the 3K GSK, few ever have EGT problems because of the fueling curve. The #10 in my pump alone is worth an addition of 40 H. P. and the GSK extends the range of power. I have gauges in hand too. I know the trans will need help, but only after adding power.

Do you know how much power you are making with your combo? I would be curious as to how much you actually make. Seat of the pants is not always a true indicator.

After adding the plate, I know delivery valves and injectors will add more power, but the right parts must be chosen or problems result. I am looking for those with the experience to tell me what to use and what not to use and why. Thanks for your time.

I think a #6 is all I would use until after I upgraded the transmission. I don't know how much your camper weighs, but mine weighs over 9k and the #6 plate handles it well. My stock transmission is still OK, but I am looking forward to the day when I can upgrade it to put the power I have now to the ground without having to "baby" the transmission so much.

tgrfan2, your 98 with the #6 plate will make more power than my 95 with the #6 plate so that's not a fair comparison. I have every intention of updating my trans when that time comes. I still want to know what delivery valves and injectors to use for adding power without adding problems.

Thanks, ronco

The #6 is on my 95 and I plan to go with the 250/630 on my 98 soon if my $3000. 00 rear end fix on my 98 holds up. I am still checking the magnetic plug on it every thousand miles. All I can say about the #6 on my 95 is that with the cruise set at 72 mph it would hall my camper into the foothills of the SC mountains and hold that speed without downshifting. When it maxes out power at about 32# boost the whole truck rumbles and I keep a close eye on the trans temp & rpm to make sure I am not slipping the torque converter lockup. If you pull hard with a more powerfull plate you aren't going to have reliability with a stock automatic long.

Last year I ran 275 hp with:

160 pump with #5 plate in stock position

181 delivery valves (used = cheap)

215 injectors (used also)

14 cm exhaust housing

3" stock exhaust

timing at 15

A larger exhaust (or muffler removal) and a 24 valve intercooler might allow me to tow a big trailer like yours. I think with a #6 plate it would be no problem.

tgrfan2, thanks for clearing that up. Extreme, thanks for sharing that info. The tells me what direction to go now!

How did this affect your fuel mileage?

I was getting just over 17 mpg consistantly. Less in the winter (15ish) but I was happy to give up that little bit of milage for the performance increase.

I just got a tick over 16 with my current set up but it's much worse in the winter than the set up above.

upgrades

TST recommended #6 plate for my '95. I have the stock injectors. The only other upgrades (other than the next level of injectors) you really need for your application are: DTT valvebody, torque convertor(more power to your rear wheels) and gauges. If your transmission is in healthy condition, or has low miles than that should do it for you. If your transmission has many, many miles, then you may want to wait on the DTT stuff until you upgrade or replace your transmission. Your next needed upgrade should be an exhaust brake(again, talk with Bill at DTT. His Smartcontroller is meshed with the Pacbrake). :p
