A friend just bought a 95 Dodge/Cummins with an automatic. He say's it acts like it's governed at 65mph. He also says the transmission downshifts at highway speeds for no reason, and generally shifts wierd. I did a search on the transmission issue and see that the throttle position sensor has issue's, but found nothing on the speed problem. Could they be related or is it something different?

Sounds like he is not getting into OD. If the TPS is acting up, it will keep him from getting into OD. Have him try locking out OD by pressing the OD button on the dash. I suspect he will still be limited to 65 mph max.

I have cleaned a couple of TPS's by drilling a couple of small holes and spraying contact cleaner into the holes. Have had mixed and short term results doing this. Ended up buying replacement at NAPA.

GaryOwen: I dont think he's getting into overdrive from his description of what's happening. I told him about the TPS and to clean it to see if it helped.

ChuckWilson: I don'd understand what you mean by "fuel throttle". Can you elaborate a little, or did you mean full throttle(pedal not going down to maximum travel)? Thanks

Make sure your fuel filter is clean. Limited fuel will also make the trans act whacky. I think the previous post meant FULL throttle, and I agree.

Try disconnecting the alternator completely then drive it. Sounds weird but if the alt has 1 diode out it will still charge but will bleed a/c voltage to the computer and really mess up the shifting. I Have seen this many times where the trans was going in and out of o/d and doing some weird stuff, after disconnecting the alt completely the truck drove perfect, new alt and all was good!!! Check the shut-down solenoid, if it doesnt open all the way it can limit power.

By full throttle i mean the throttle lever on the pump has a spring loaded lever on it that pops off its stop when the throttle goes past full fuel on the pump. the older 12V hardly could do it new, they get ware in the linkage & wont go full throttle. if you adjust the linkage to get it to break over alittle bit & it will run like a hole new truck!!!!! also check the peddle assy. inside it could be junk. I built a steel pedle assy. for mine!

i have a 96 and have had the same problem a few times. It is your overdrive. First i think it was a relay problem in the power dist panel in the engine compartment. Then it turns out that the wiring going into trans was exposed (the insulation basically rotted off)so i went to the junkyard and cut off the harness from a gas rig. Have you coded it yet???

Waiting for him to get busy working on his truck. He has oil and diesel fuel leaks too. He needs to clean his motor to trace the leaks, clean the TPS, etc...

When he gets going on it and gets back to me I'll post more. Thanks for your replies.

Check the transmission fluid level. When I bought my 95, it didn't behave well, had a hard time kicking into OD and would buck bad when cold.

It was almost 2 quarts low!
