my throttle position sensor has gone bad again. I recently installed potentiometer in the place of it. my question is, are there any negatives to this. the truck drives good and very predictable.

That TPS is only a potentiometer in a fancy case .I took mine apart when it gave me trouble ,cleaned it and glued it back together and has been working fine for years .I used a tiny Dremel cutter along the seam where its put together .

4570 thanks for your reply. I"am poor in electronics. so far the radio shack part is doing good, but I will not discard my old tps. thanks

The potentiometer method of replacement is the best I've found. I just did it to my 95 last week. The TPS had been failing for some time and recently I took a 1000 mile trip and boy was it annoying! Now it's steady and consistent and the best part is that with the potentiometer in place, your torque converter stays locked up even when you let off the throttle. This cuts shifts in and out of lockup and gives you a slight engine braking.

I have had a potentiometer in my truck for several years now. I would never go back. I can adjust where I want it to shift, depending on load. The only downside is that it will no longer downshift when I hit the gas. It doesn't bother me. I just hit the OD button on the shifter. This would probably be the first mod I would recommend to anyone, regardless of the condition of their tps.

I live in the San Francisco area and Radio Shack has vanished I would like to buy a potentiometer, perhaps on line any links here?

Don thanks for the reply. I initially had the meter set a little rich, and my downshift from o.d. was a little rough. I now have shift to o.d. at about 38mph and it works wonderful.my truck will not shift into o.d. before 38 mph regardless of throttle position. like I said it works good thanks for reply GBax.

I wrote this in a post a while back:

The pre made one above is probably the easiest way to go. I made my own because I was on a mission to do so. I used the Radio Shack 5k-ohm Linear Taper Potentiometer part #: 271-1714 ($4. 00). Not the audio potentiometer. You will need some 3 strand 18 gauge wire. I purchased 6 foot of 18-4 sprinkler wire from home depot ($8. 00). I only used 3 of the wires. Just cut the connecter off of the wires going to the TPS. Attach the center wire on the connecter to the center wire on the potentiometer. Then attach the other two wires. It doesn't matter which side they go on, but they do determine which way the knob will operate. I twisted my wires together and took it for a test drive. It worked, but I had to turn the knob counter clockwise to raise the mph it would shift into 4th. In my mind, this was backwards. I just swapped the two wires and soldered everything together. I left the old TPS in place so not to mess with the linkages. I will attach this thread because it has a few pictures. It over complicated the whole thing by utilizing computer connectors to plug the wires together. It also has a few wrong part numbers posted. I will not post the part number for the knob because the will be a selection of knobs there. You can decide what knob you like. I cut about a half inch of the potentiometer post to shorten the knob. Just thought it would look better. I used low temperature solder to solder the wires to the potentiometer so I would not melt it. If you use the low temperature solder, make sure you are in a well-ventilated area. It contains lead.

I saved the old connecter so I can return it to stock just by reattaching the end and plugging it in. THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN! I would do this mod even if your TPS is working perfectly fine. It makes a good driving vehicle great. Good luck.

jMcCoy I think this was the article I originally read and bought the parts using these numbers. I also left my tps in place. I used a 4 wire trailer light connector the female wired to vehicle harness and male plug (2) one on potentiometer pig tail one to original tps plug in. I don't plan on plugging back to tps. again thanks
