I am working on a friend's '95 2500/automatic Cummins Dodge. He was going down the road when the exhaust started popping and blowing white smoke. The engine lost power and then died. After sitting a few minutes, it cranked back but had no power and lots of white smoke/popping again. He trailered it to me this morning. He had already topped off the fuel tank and changed the fuel filter. Using the primer, we were unable to get fuel through the bleeder on the fuel filter housing. What is the best thing to first check? Screen in transfer pump? Pick up tube/screen in fuel tank?

Any help is appreciated, as I have never experienced this situation before, although the white smoke/popping is similar to when I plugged my fuel filter with my WVO concoction!

Thanks!

John

John: I had the same thing happen on my 96 a few years back. Pulled out of the driveway, then it died. In almost 200k miles, this is the first time this truck had failed for me. Fuel filter was empty and I could not pump it up. I thought it was the fuel pump so I replaced it. Probably the worst job I've done on this truck. Filled the filter with fresh diesel. It starts and runs for a minute then then stalls again. It turned out to be the fuel module in the tank pick up tube had somehow gotten porus. Replace the module and all was well.

Hope this helps,

John

I was gonna say check the lines and especially around the top of the tank Two years ago I repired mine as the metal tubes coming out of the tank were just about to rust thru. I aslo had the sttel fuel line rust thru as well

Thanks for the ideas guys. I will check these things tomorrow. I should be able to remove a line near the fuel filter or transfer pump and blow compressed air into the fuel tank to slightly pressurize the system and should get fuel if the lines are ok and not plugged...

I will check what yall mentioned. He just bought the truck not long ago and it had been treated ROUGH.

Thanks again!

John

standard procedure in any diesel shop is to run engine on aux. fuel supply using clear tubing so you can watch for air, connect tubing diretly to filter housing with aux 12v primer pump from nanpa, insuring fresh filter primed fuel system and o rings are clean and well installed. If symptom is gone then tank and plumbing are suspect

Found two problems with the truck. The assembly in the fuel tank where the sending unit and pickup tube are located was broken, both the plastic and metal parts. The primer pump was also leaking. We removed the bed and starter to access the top of tank and the primer pump. I will get both parts tomorrow. Thanks for the help yall!
