Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 95 running different temps

A buddy of mine at school has a 95 3500 4x4 5 speed (so that everyone knows) and it is stock as the day it ran off the factory line. And while we were changing his thermostat this afternoon we put the temp gun on the individual cylinders. This is what we got 202 on number 6 and 235 on number 1 all cylinders in between were at different temps between those two. This was at idle obviously with the temp guage in the cab reading 180 so it was good and warm. He also told me that it has developed a problem of when it gets warm after driving it a little while that when he comes down to an idle that it wants to try and idle at around 250-300 in that range and almost wants to die. So even though we are a diesel mech. school no one really knows what is causing it without pulling stuff to "research" so I thought I would turn to the good ole' TDR guys first and see what the "EXPERTS" thought.

The end cylinders always run hotter with #6 the hottest. This is due to uneven distribution of the intake air. Take a look, the intake comes down right between 3 and 4 then has to spread out to the ends getting heated along the way.

The idle problem sounds like a bad overflow valve. When the spring in the valve starts losing it's push it's effected by warmer fuel after the trucks been running and the fuel pressure can drop too low.

ok maybe I wasnt completely clear. The no. 6 cyl. is the coolest of the them all. And no. 1 is the hottest. So that is my question. Why would no. 3 and 4 be warmer than no. 6 and why would no. 1 be the hottest? I understand that it is farther away than no. 's 3 and 4.
