Hi guys, My 95 2500 2WD will not start. 150K on truck and I love it. Drove the truck about 4 days ago, ran fine. After sitting for a couple of days, crank but no start. Pushed on the prime button a few (100) times, still nothing.

Cracked the bleed bolt on the fuel filter and pumped some more until fuel came out. Closed and pumped some more until it got hard (to pump). I did hear the return sing, at least that's what I thought it was. Truck then started and ran for 4 to 5 min. I even reved it up to about 1800 RPM, and it seemed to run fine.

True to life, I turned it off to see if it would re start. . Oh no. Of course it just cranked, but no start.

My son 98 24V, came over and said to replace fuel filter, so I did. What a chore. Reprimed and sang (return?), got hard, but no start.

My son then suggested we open fuel/water valve and crank to see if it sprayed or just dripped, It just dripped, no spray or gush.

Any thoughts on what to do next? Lift pump?

Thanks, Skip

Did you crack loose a nut on an injector? Are you getting fuel at the injectors. . sounds like the fuel system isn't staying primed. .

Causes, lift pump/check valves, overflow valve, return line (rubber degrades), restriction in fuel line delivery system, plugged pre-filter screen (in bowl to the left of fuel transfer/lift pump).

Let us know what you find.

Good luck

Andy

It could be an air leak. Check the supply rubber line. Remove the fuel heater to see if that helps. That's easy to do. Use a 17mm socket to remove the pre-filter from the bottom. Then an 8mm allen wrench to remove the black hockey puck looking fuel heater. Put the pre-filter back on without the fuel heater. Prime it and start to see if that made any difference.

Thanks Andy and Joe for the hints. I will be out of town for a few days and will check these things when I return. Will keep in touch and let you know what I find.

Skip... Have you checked the fuel solenoid for actuation? (its directly behind the injection pump, with three heavy wires coming out of it, red, blue, and white i think) Very probable you have a bad relay that isnt energizing the coil in that solenoid, possibly the solenoid itself but I`d check the relay first. You can watch it actuate while starting, but dont crank for more than 15-20secs at a time, it will burn the solenoid. Trace the wires back to the relay, its on the upper firewall directly behind it. Theres two relays next to each other that look the same. might want to tap on it while cranking. could be a fuel prime problem also tho if the hoses havent been touched since stock.

good luck

Jerry

Guys... thanks for all the comments. My son bought a 95 truck at auction this week... . wouldn't start.

So I found this thread and followed what you guys suggested...

We got it going a short while ago.

Fuel heater was leaking thru the electric plug. Removed it for now. Bled the system. Found the solenoid was toast... would hold but would not engage on it's own... . plastic was melted where the wires go in. Removed and tiewrapped the lever up.

Bingo!! She runs. And darned good I might add for a stocker.

That's probably why the PO sold it... couldn't get it running.

Also found the drain valve is leaking... probably cracked. . I've seen that before.

Now he has some parts to buy tomorrow to fix it right.

Again... TDR is awsum.

Jay:

We'll share more secrets if you can get your employer to turn loose of the unit bearings in out 4x4 hubs (second gen. 's) :)

Glad you are happy with the new ride. What a cool dad you are, I hope he appreciates you and the truck.

Actually I don't know much about the bearings... I'm an ex-Torrington Co guy... we got bought 2 years ago...

Thanks to all of you for your replys, and great info. I replaced the lift pump and the large 90 degree lift pump hose to the heater. I also cleaned the filter in the fuel heater bowl (just a little crud), put it all back together and after a few turn overs (5or 6) it started. Ran rough for a few seconds, with lots of smoke, then smoothed out and ran like a dream. I still love my truck.

I get about 11. 5 to 12 mpg towing a 30 foot Excel 5th wheel all over the USA. My wife and I have been full-timers for the last 3 years, but we are now going to hang up the 5er for a while and bought a house in Virginia Beach.

Empty I get about 19 to 20 MPG on the road and about 17 around town.

I still wonder why anyone would drive a 3/4 or up pick-up and not use diesel.

Gas here about 1. 80 a gal, diesel 1. 56.

Thanks again to you all.

I still love my truck.
