Hey Joe

I pulled the pre heater off and reinstalled the pre filter. However, i just tried to prime it and i dont see air coming from the bleed screw but there is a good amount of diel fuel dripping out of the bottom of the fuel filter (from the whole of the bottom of the black plastic outlet. i tried to push it down to see if it would stop but it still is dripping...

I figured i would try and start it anyways... So with a new fuel filter and minus the preheater and a cleaned out pre filter the thing still will not start... Whats my next step guys?

If there are no air bubbles in the fuel then you probably have fixed the air leak. If the injection pump has a lot of air in it then you may have to run the starter a few times to get it to go. Remember to stop and let the starter cool after 15 seconds or so. You will need to fix the fuel filter leak. If the drain valve on the bottom of the filter is ok then you may have damaged the O-ring when you installed the drain valve.

Hey- UPDATE

Let it crank for about 10 seconds and the thing started up. it started poorly but i ran it at 1800rpm for about 1 minute and it ran fine. im gonna take it out. However, it has started up about 10 times now and when it starts it doesnt sound the same as it did before. The engine that is. Any ideas? Its leaking pretty good out of the drain hole so i will buy one tomorrow. Anyone have a cummins parts number for it? The engine just doesnt sound the same and that worries me a little. The bleed valve still has some air bubbles coming out so i will drive it and replace the drain valve and bleed again... Any ideas of the sound, let me know... thanks so much

it almost sounds like a small ticking noise... .

Erik

When there is air in the injection lines there will be some rock and roll until all the cylinders get to work. It may not have been running like it should before. You will know better when you get the leak fixed. The fuel leak is just going to get worse. You have 20 to 30+ PSI pushing fuel out of it.

UPDATE 6/24-

Got the water drain valve from cummins cal pacific yesterday and installed this morning. No more leaks. I first bled and found some bubbles and then straight fuel so i tightened it back up. Started up and idled rough but then was fine. Started up five times and idled normally. However, when i would shut off the engine i would hear and good screatching noise. i didnt like the way that sounded. Any ideas on that?

Atleast i got it running and hopefully it will be okay, im gonna bring it to my cousin to change the rest of the lines so i have some help

Erik

Its kind of does sound like a belt chirp. its about a 1/2 second long and it is the last noise you hear after the key is turned off. Ive never heard it before on this truck so i figure it is just a coincidence or maybe part of the problem... lol what am i going to do? haha

erik :{

this is a WAG, but I'm betting that now your truck is actually running better than before, and when you kill it, the engine is turning harder than it was before...

belt chirp is very common... for some reason my truck doesn't do it and it's a fairly new belt! I miss my belt chirp! :( :D

Forrest

Some belts chirp and some don't. It's just the Cummins stopping right now like it should and the alternator being late. If it bothers you get a gatorback.

Okay guys, belt chirp went away after driving it all day. After i let it sit for more than an hour i notice it takes it longer to start and idle is slightly off for a few seconds. I also smell a little fuel. im going to look into replacing the lines next. Atleast it runs :)

Erik

Here's a little tip to get more room to work on your '96. The master cylilnder is fastened to the brake booster with two nuts that fit a 15mm socket. Remove the nuts and you can lean the master cylinder toward the fender.

I like that space saving idea!

However, i tried to start it up this morning and it wont start again...

Heater is pulled out, new fuel filter installed, new water drain valve, system bled... . If i let it sit for more than a little bit it seems to lose its prime. I'm gonna tow it to my cousins shop, check the fuel pressure and then replace all the rubber fuel lines and maybe look into replacing the lift pump

erik

Hey guys-

today i got to take a look into the proble more... It just started to leak fuel really bad... I check and the return line between the i injection pump and the steel line that runs along the frame is totally rotten. The supply line has some fine cracks and i will replace that too. I bet that this whole problem was from the bad lines that i couldnt see before... Im replacing the lift pump as a precaution since ive got 160 on the original

erik

Doesn't Geno's or LarryB's have sets of replacement rubber fuel lines in a 'kit' for sale?

My Ford did the same thing with the fuel system loosing its prime overnight because of bad rubber lines. It was a pain to reprime without that primmer button that the Dodge comes with. I wonder if the newer Ford diesels have a prime button? I may never know (or care for that matter) Cause I'm happy with what I have now1
