Archived 96 2wd 2500 5spd won't start unless you pop start it

A friend has a 96 2wd Reg Cab 2500 5spd that I've been working on a little.



Well at first his truck was slow to start he swore his batteries were good so I ordered a LarryB contact kit. Found out his batteries were bad so he replaced those... ... . still slow to start... ... finally it wont' start unless its pop started with the clutch.



We installed the contact kit today and his truck still will not start. His contacts were in need of replacement though.



All the truck will do though is click when you turn the key and smoke comes out of the little hole on the bottom of the starter.



This is over my head guys (I'm only 19) I'm guessing he's gonna have to have a new starter or something but somebody please help cause he's constantly bug'n me for an answer.

Won't start

Sounds like the back bushing is worn out on the armature. He either needs a complete rebuild or just go buy a new starter.

IT sounds like it may be the fuel shutoff solenoid... . if it cranks, and does not turn over, the relay may be out... you did not mention if you had to manually lift the shutoff solenoid to get it to pop start, but that is my guess... . my truck did the same thing, and it turned out to be the shutoff solenoid... Just something to think about. .

Yep, starter is shot.



You'd be best to buy te one Larry B has for sale on his website since it is a new starter, not rebuilt.



If he's strapped for cash, a rebuilt starter can be had for less than $200.



Or, he can take it to a local shop and have it rebuilt for less.
