A good friend of mine wants me to help him change his fuel filter on his 96 3500 stake body truck . I looked in archives, did'nt find much on 1996 & had a hard time getting around on Fritz's web. I believe the filter is FS1253 @ Geno's. I would appreciate any help & thanks in advance . Mike

Make sure you have a strap wrench (NAPA has them cheap). I have moved the two larger releys from directly above the fuel filter as far to the driver side of the firewall as the wires will reach. This will help get more room. You can also remove the one bolt holding the oil dipstick and back it out from under the pump to make more room.

Drain all the fuel with the drain valve on the bottom of the filter. Unhook the Water In Fuel (WIF) connector (wires run to bottom of filter. Remove the drain line hose from bottom of filter.

Work from the top, stick WIF wires inside of strap wrench and slide the strap wrench over the filter. My strap wrench uses a 1/2" drive socket. I use a 6" extension from strap wrench to ratchet. Keep nylon strap close to top of filter housing. If filter is stuck on, this will keep it from crushing so bad. When you can spin by hand use both hands to catch filter and bring out by going under most of the lines and wires first and them up and out the driver side. Remove the rubber seal that will be left on the filter housing were the filter threads on. Sometimes the treaded portion of the housing unthreads and comes with the filter. Put back in the housing.

Add a little oil to the new filter rubber seals. One goes back on the housing were the filter threads on the other goes inbetween the WIF sensor. Use a pliers to unscrew the WIF and install into new filter with new seal.

I personally do not pre fill filter, to much of a mess. You can if you do not want to pump filter full with manual pump. Either with fuel or dry, reinstall and get as tight by hand as you can. Plug WIF connector and install drain line hose. Even if you prefilled filter, Pump the manual fuel pump below the filter until it sounds like fuel leaking (its really not) or you start to get resistance. If the filter was empty, it will take a few pumps (OK a heck of a lot of pumps). Truck should start with out missing a beat.

THANKS

JJW-ND, Thanks , these instructions ought to help me out alot. My friend Kevin and I were talking about our trucks,I told him next oil change, i'm changing my fuel filter. He said he has'nt ever changed his, Kevin said he had appx. 22,000 miles on it, and was'nt having any problems, just thought we should change it. Being a fellow CTD owner & a friend I offered to help him change it. Thanks again
