Does anyone have a recommendation for a reputable AT dealer in Vermont or New Hampshire? I live close to the Canadian border My AT is dying for the second time (148k miles). Our local Dodge dealer repaired it 50k ago. The AT growls in first and second constantly. I suspect I should replace instead of rebuild. Truck is stock 2500 and I tow nothing, maybe a few sheep and thats' it.

Hi Djowell, I used to spend a lot of time around Franconia, N. H. (Too bad about the Old Man of the Mountain!) Anyway, my 2-bits on your transmission problem is this:

Do yourself a favor and do not let the dealer re-build your trans.

They will only put the same old minimum-duty parts in it.

Have you called any of the Performance Trans Rebuilders? When my trans started to go out, I called 'em all, and went with ATS.

I believe ATS has an affiliate in Lyndeborough, N. H.

J&D Diesel Performance 603-532-2240 (I think)

Lyndeborough is west of Manchester.

But I would also call ATS first.

Robert,

Thanks for the info. I just got off the phone with john from JD performance. His suggestion was an ATS transmission + a torque converter. Expensive (around 4100. 00 ouch) installedbut it will solve the probelm for good.

Well, think of it this way. That is probably about $1,500-1,800 more than the stock rebuild (out in Cal. that is true anyway)

For $1,500-1,800 more you are getting a bullet proof TC, which will last hundreds of thousands of miles. The TripleLok TC will outlast several re-builds, so it will most likely be the last TC you buy. In contrast, if you go with the stock rebuild, you will just be putting another stock TC in it, and another stock TC every time it breaks. The ATS TC won't break! You are also getting a vastly up-graded Transmission. And the many of the upgrades will also outlast the stock trans.

Now that is the practical side. On the emotional side... the ATS Stage IV is WAY MORE FUN!!;)

I'd go with ATS again hands down! By the way, here is a thread I posted when I got back from ATS 2 years ago. It tells about how they do the rebuild.

I have an AT/w torque converter out of my 1998 that ran fine when I pulled it out. I really don't know what its worth but its doing me no good. Also has Mag Tec oil pan. Make me an offer.

live in DE now.
