Well, my son and I FINALLY got to "run" a 2001 Toyota Tundra

4X4 towing the same sized racing trailer as us, an 18 footer,

both fully loaded. Remember the commercial back around

the first of the year showing the Toyota Tundra pulling a

boat and passing a Dodge, Chevy and Ford on a hill???

Those trucks were all gas powered I'm sure.

Well, I am here to tell you the results of our little

"run" was much different than the commercial.

We race ATV's and were eastbound on I-40 just west

of Winston-Salem. Another racer who had also been at

the track and who just purchased a 2001 Tundra came up

alongside of us at about 75 MPH. Initially, we could not

do anything because of the traffic. He followed me through

the outskirts of the city staying with us pretty good. I noticed

that when I got my speed up over 85 MPH he seemed to fade

back some. Once we got on the open road between Winston-

Salem and Greensboro we lined "side by side" at 75 MPH.

We pulled him from the start and before letting off we were

at least 5 to 7 truck lengths ahead of him. We did it again

starting at about 80 MPH and at that speed it seemed like

we pulled away faster.

Anyway, we finally pulled over at a rest area near Raleigh to

"talk about it. " The owner of the Tundra said he "was covered

in black smoke each time and wanted to know if there was

something wrong with my truck!!" I told him "no", and tried

to explain the smoke was a combination of my pump settings,

injectors and the load I was pulling. He said his truck was

"cutting out" as he reached 95 MPH. (Possibly a governor?)

He told my son and I he didn't know a diesel could run like

that.

I had been wanting to do this for some time (run a loaded

Tundra) and thought you (the members) would enjoy hearing

about it. I would still like to try it in the mountains (on I-77)

on those 4-5% grades. Our "run" was pretty much on level

highway with slight inclines.

I just wonder what stock to stock would do. I pulled stock to stock against a F350 with each of us with 12" trailers and about 3K# loads we were an even match up 5-6% grade.

Rob:

Thanks for the comment.

Eric:

You are right, if my truck was still "stock" it may have

been different. Mine was real low on power when it

was new. But... ... . it was still fun!

A guy in a tundra pulling a dinky lightweight trailer was screwing with me in Co Spgs a couple of years ago. He did good light to light with his auto. He was right on my a$$ when we got on the steep freeway ramp to go north(the keyword is steep). I didn't look back until I was up to highway speed and merged in(the end of the approach lane)and he was still on the steep part of the ramp, grunting away. They aren't even halfway close if there's any hill involved! A stock CTD would also have no problem. My son-in-law had a tundra and used to rave about how good it ran until I gave him a ride in mine! Thanks for the input!

I agree with you that the more "load" that is put on the

Tundra the slower they become. I drove Toyota pickups

for years before buying the Dodges. (up until 91')

The reason I finally "got out of them" was because of

the trouble I had getting up the steep hills in the

mountains. And the steeper the hill, the worse my

mileage became. The last Toyota I owned was an

89' 4X4 extra cab, 5 speed, black in color. It was the

one that won "Truck of the Year" and was pictured on

alot of billboards. It just couldn't get the job done so

I sold it and bought a 92' Dodge CTD which went to

100,000 miles before I sold it to get my 96'. (I needed

the extra cab which my 92' didn't have. )

Thanks again.

And for a mere $31,000 you too can have a *TUNDRA*! That's what a co-worker paid for his. It's a cute little toy truck. Especially the little wading bird leg rear axle. It tows his 1500 lb bass boat like it's not even back there! There's a 3500 DC around here that tows yachts on a 5th wheel yacht transporter. I'm sure he knows his 20,000 lb plus load is back there. To each his own...

little trucks

I've always said little trucks are the best to use when going to pick up a big load. They just aren't worth a darn to bring it back in. :D

My '96 1/2 ton out pulled '00 Tacoma TRD... . check out the loads:

Me = 33' 5er @ 9500lb (yeah, I know... thats why I have a CTD now)

Tacoma = 12' flat bed w/ 1 Quad and 1 motorcycle!

Any CTD will destroy a 'Yota!

I forget what gear ratio those things come with but it makes a 4. 10 look like cruising gears. When they do pull a Jon boat up a grade, they're doing it at alittle less than 5k rpm. I'd be alittle curious as to the temp of that little itty bitty knot of a pumkin glowing back there under the truck while it's working too. They're cute and all that but the big three make real trucks for real work. Let's see how they haul in 10 years with 300,000 on the clock! All for more than I paid for my DC. What are these knuckle heads thinking? Reliable? The only car I ever lemon lawed was a Toyota. Never again will I turn my back on the big three for hype and hysteria. Ever price a lexus? It's a Mercedes with a Toyota motor.

I wouldn't knock the Toyota motors too much. Next to the Cummins in our Dodges', they are the most reliable on the road. I sold a '89 4X4 with 150K on it to a friend. It now has 300K with no repairs whatsoever. Even has the original clutch. They are very reliable vehicles in their market niche.

i bet that neither one of y'all could outperform the solid black pursuit cars that the forsyth co sherriff dept is using on the 1-40 bypass now. just to let you know, they park them on both sides of the interstate, just behind the guardrail, looking like a disabled vehicle. these cars [chevy camaros] will flat out fly. thats a bad stretch of road to be trying to outdo another truck. why not take both rigs to the nc va line on 77, stop at the rest area in va, then pull fancy gap mtn from there. now that is a pulling test.

Todd:

I'm sure the new ones are pretty good, the J. D. Powers

surveys show that. However, that 89' I had (which I

described above) suffered from the warped exhaust

manifold problem causing a noisy leak not once but

twice. My wife had a 90' 4-Runner LOADED and it had

the same problem. My gripe with that problem was

my dealership in Houston, Texas (Tejas Toyota) would

never admit that it was a real problem, but it was!

Anyway, I bought the 92' Dodge CTD at that time

and I am glad I did! As as I said above the problems

in the mountains towing were my other complaint.

I just couldn't get up the hills with that 3. 0 liter

V-6 coupled to the 5-speed.

packman:

Your right buddy, I couldn't beat one of those police

package Chevy Camaros!

But I do run I-77 from Fancy Gap on up north alot!

I will be on that route in about two weeks when I

head up to the "Scheid Rally" in Indiana. Your right,

it is a VERY GOOD stretch of road for testing the

pulling abilities of a truck. And... ..... I would LOVE

to "run" that Tundra loaded exactly like we were

last time on I-40.

Thanks for the input!

I just got to say one word "Radio"

Many a car has out ran the cops but they can't touch the radio.

John

If you want to have some fun bring your "red Rocket" to Goldsboro on friday. I plan on pulling my "overvalved, slow truck" in the stock pickup class.

You know me I always have to be a smart ???.

I agree about the road (I77) at the Va/Nc border, that is one neck of a hill that goes on and on and on. My problem with it is my wife will say things like look at that is'nt it pretty and look over there. My slow truck don't want to but I slow her down going up there due to all the semis crawling up the "HILL". Lots of FOG there to most times.

Have fun

See ya

Chris

PS Pete told me I need to work on my post count. :D :D

Chris:

I can't make it to Goldsboro on Friday. You have to give

me more notice than that. But... ... . one of these days

I will come to a sled pull and see what I can do.

However, if I do that, you have to agree to "run" me

"truck-to-truck" with no trailers attached. What do you

think? I hear you have been doing pretty good at those

pulls Chris. You coming to the "Scheid Rally?"

-----------

John_P

Let me know when you want to go and do a pull off, I'll be there. I will "run" against you as in the distance your stock truck with a slush box pulls the sled and how much my stock truck pull distance. I think we are both running the same size 1/2 worn out BFG A/T.

There is no way I would race you I can not shift my truck fast enough to keep up to the engine.

As far as the up coming event I don't know yet, I would like to. I hope things will fall in place better than they did for the Munice event that I could not attend. I need to take a few days and just go. . Of course if I could find some 275 injectors and maybe a EZ box then I would have to go.

:D :D

See Ya

Chris

Someone we both know told me once that you will race anything that has wheels. From RVs to lawn mowers. :D :p :D

See Ya
