Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 96 Fuel Filters

Was wondering if the valve and the bottom of the fuel filter for a 96 4 x 4 leaking/not shutting after a filter change is a common occurance.



Changed my fuel filter and after everything was said and done fuel started squrting out of that valve. There was enough fuel comming out to put my truck out of commision until I can hitch a ride to the dealer ship on Monday to replace that thing. I did check to see if I over tightened it and saw no cracks, The only problem that I could see was that the valve it self would not close all the way allowing fuel to pour out of the bottom of the filter. Drain Valve

That valve gets very little exercise, and can get stiff from lack of use. Then when you use it it won't shut off. Usually just exercising the handle several times will get it to seal. Sometimes small amounts of junk from inside the filter housing get into the valve and keep it from seating and sealing, the same flushing/exercising of the valve usually works for this problem too.



I'd try the above before buying a new valve or canister.



Now if you are talking about the fuel heater that is another issue.

I recently had a similar problem, but the welded boss on the bottom of the FleetGuard filter sprang a leak. It looked like a bad sensor but after changing it... . it still leaked. A new filter fixed it.

I did work the valve a little bit, but I did come to the same conculusion. I think that the valve has not been worked in such a long time that there is gunk or somthing stopping from seating. It wants to but it just wont shut off. Thats why I am undecided on whether or not I want to mess with thing any more or just buy a new one and be done with it... Thank you very much for your reply I am glad that I was on the right track.

my 96 had a leak around the molded wires at the drain valve/water in fuel sensor got 2 from genos 16. 95 ea. local dealer wanted 34. 00

I just replaced the valve/sensor on mine. Fuel filter had not been changed in @8K miles. I've never worked the valve on the bottom either. I smelled fuel when I stopped and traced it to the valve.

It went from a little leak to pouring in just a 30 mile drive to the house.

Just finished fixing the valve truck is running great!



I would have ordered one from Genos two but I needed my truck tonight to get to work, I ended up getting stiffed for $62. 00 bucks at the dealer. and another $65 bucks at the pump to replace the 26 gallons that I donated to the pavement. This has to be the most expensive fuel filter replacment ever!

should have went to Cummins

When the wire broke on mine I went to Cummins and only way you could get the valve was with a new filter combo about $23. 00 I believe for both. but that was a couple years ago. sorry to hear about your misfortune and being gouged.

Good to know about cummins, I haven't checked Geno's yet but I would be intrested in knowing if cummins still sells that combo for 23 bucks.

Watch for bad filters too, I had 2 filters, both leaking bad from the part that the valve screws into, 2 IN A ROW! And a leaking valve it self, I know because after sealing all the openings in the valve and changing the filter to a Fleetguard, it was fine. So I drove around for a few weeks like that til I got a replacement from Genos.

I had the same thing & it was a fleetguard. It didn't leak when I installed it but started about 5K miles after. I'm guessing the weld fatigued & cracked.

I didn't realize that this was a common problem with the fuel filters. I am glad I started this post so that I can keep on eye on this thing in the future.

maybe there quality is going down hill. marbe we need to just go to the non-sender filter.

Believe me, I could not accept the fact that I had 2 bad filters AND a valve that decided to leak, I was in total denial! I'm glad I got that episode solved.

Let me tell I was ****** off because somthing that should have only taken 20 mins and only costing about 32 bucks turned into days and costing 3 times that amount. But at least now I know what to look out for thanks to everyones responses.

Remeber, my Prime Loc may have contributed to the filter failure, more then normal vibration.
