My 96 has seem to has became hard to start in the past couple months. If the truck sits for more than four or five hours it takes a while for it start and once it does start it idles real rough for a few seconds. Some morning are worse than others. New fuel filter less than 8000 miles ago. I have heard lift pump or timing. Any other input would be appreciated

I posted this in another thread:

The list of fuel system problems that can cause a leak and/or low fuel pressure in order of probability is:

Fuel supply and return hoses

Overflow valve spring less than 1/2" long

Fuel heater

Fitting on top of fuel heater

Pre-filter and fuel heater gaskets

Fitting on input to fuel filter

Curved hose between pre-filter and lift pump

Sticking fuel solenoid

Lift pump O-rings

Lift pump

Was 8000 miles ago that "couple of months" that the problem has come up?

I'd check over my fuel filter just to rule it out. A gasket or the bleeder valve might be letting air into the system ahead of the p-pump.

8000 miles was a couple months ago, but it seemed like the problem was there before the fuel filter was replaced. It has gradually became more of an issue. It seems worse some days more than others.

Mine had the exact same problems your having. I marked in bold what fixed my hard start problem. The biggest problem was the soft line from the prefilter to the liftpump. This softline had some serious cracks that would suck air but not leak diesel.
