Can anyone tell me what a 96 5spd. should idle at. The pump was just reworked & its idleing at 1000 rpm which I think is alittle high.

Mine is somewhere in that range (850-900) with the defroster on and engine warmed up. When you drop it in gear you know you have a connection to the rear wheels:D :D :D :D

Gota pay attention to the brake pedal in town and make sure you have it firmly pressed at the stop lights:) :) :)

It almost has to be that high for it to run around town in the mornings with the exhaust brake on for faster warming. Oo. Oo. Oo.

Higher might be better!

You might find that a slightly higher idle 850+ (what the data plate recomends) will give you better starting.

On my 96 5sp, If my idle drops much below 800 it will take a few revolutions to start. If I keep it at 850 or up it starts the second I hit the key. Also, it starts with no smoke.

With a manual, the higher idle helps drive with no throttle starts.

Idle is pretty easy to set and experiment with.

A friend showed me how to play with my idle and I have found that around 850 to900 is good for me I was at around 650 and you had to press the loud pedal to start it good. . :)

96 cummins idle speed

With my idle speed set at 850-900rpm it starts much easier. When idle speed was lower it would spin a few revelutions before the engine would breath fire, now when you hit the key it pops right off.
